Balliol College Website

Overview: College has given full support to disabled students in the past, including special room conversions and a roster of guides for a blind student. Balliol is situated close to the principal libraries and the centre of the city. In recent years, Balliol has undertaken a number of major projects to improve the access to its building.

College sites: The main entrance at the Porters' Lodge is flat and there are three steps down to the Front Quadrangle – a wheelchair platform is provided. In the Porters’ Lodge the counter has been lowered to a wheelchair friendly height. At night there is a wicket gate (20cm threshold) but Porters are on duty all night and can be alerted by a lowered buzzer adjacent to the wicket gate and will then open the main gate. There is a telephone in the Porters' Lodge. The Back Gate on Magdalen Street East has a 20cm wicket gate requiring a key. The Magdalen Street Goods Entrance is flat and the Porters can be alerted via a buzzer to open the gate remotely. Between Front and Garden Quadrangles, there are stairs but these can be avoided by taking the flat route via the Fellows' Garden and the Chapel Passage.

The Library is upstairs but the Librarian will deliver books for individuals with mobility impairments who have ordered books by email. The Hall is upstairs; with access to the Kitchen lift for wheelchair users from Staircase 22. The Junior Common Room Bar, laundry and multi-gym are all up or down stairs. The Junior Common Room Lounge is up one small step and a ramp is provided. A telephone is provided in the Lodge area with access on the flat. The Chapel (off Front Quadrangle) is upstairs but we intend to fit a ramp next summer. A parking space can be provided. The main teaching room (L.R.23) is accessed via a platform lift and has an accessible toilet.

Accommodation: All first year and many third year students are accommodated on the main College site. All rooms have internet points. Access grants and hardship funds are available. Financial assistance is available to those living outside the College. The main site has one well-adapted room with en suite facilities. Staircases 12 and 16 on the main site have ground floor rooms, WC and either bath or shower on the same level as the Quadrangle, but all other staircases step up.

The Dellal Building: Assistance may be required on the gravel approach from the road, and with the heavy door and its combination access keypad. There is one accessible ground floor bedroom, which has adequate space and an en suite shower.

Jowett Walk Accommodation: The main gate is operated via an electronic pad and swings open electronically. There are five fully accessible ground floor bedrooms with adequate space and en suite bathrooms. There are platform lifts to enable access to the Michael Pilch Studio. Two further towers are being built incorporating a further three fully accessible rooms with en suite facilities and an accessible kitchenette.

Holywell Manor: Balliol graduate accommodation is in this building. The main entrance to the Porters' Lodge and the main building is -1, -1, +4 stairs. The alternative entrance is ramped, and provides access to James Fairfax Yard and one ground floor bedroom; assistance may be required with the diagonally sloping bridge. This bedroom has space for a wheelchair user though the nearby toilet and bath have no room for a wheelchair. There may be an option to exchange the bath for a dry-floor shower.(Manor Road. 01865 281370) The College has scheduled the work for improving the access to its buildings for the Easter of 2007.

Catering Information: Balliol provides a full-choice buffet-style lunch and dinner in the College Hall on seven days per week in term-time. Graduates or Undergraduates at the Broad Street site, and the Holywell Manor complex (including the Martin and Dellal Buildings) pay an amenity charge for use of the kitchens. This does not apply to those at Jowett Walk, the Iffley Road Graduate Flats or living out in private accommodation. Vegetarian choices are always available. The Iffley Road flats are +2.
