Magdalen College Website

Overview:Magdalen is situated on the High Street, about five minutes’ walk from the city center, and close to Magdalen Bridge and the Cowley Road. Due to the age of the College buildings, there are areas that are not accessible by wheelchair, but as long as care is taken with old and worn floor surfaces, a wheelchair user could get around most of the College independently. The College will make alterations wherever possible. Magdalen has recent experience of students who are wheelchair users, have visual and hearing impairment and also dyslexia. In each case special arrangements have been made to provide appropriate assistance.

College Site:The main entrance to the Porters' Lodge is -2 stairs. The alternative 'level' entrance to the left is via a cobbled area and two very large double doors. There is a low level bell-push, or a phone call in advance is necessary, to have these doors unlocked and opened.

The administrative offices are housed in the Grammar Hall building. There are no steps into the building (though assistance would be required,) and access for wheelchair users is to ground floor facilities only. The Grove Buildings consist of two buildings and the auditorium. The accommodation buildings, known as A and D, contain the Law Library (building A – no steps). Access to Grove Buildings (and the College) is gained readily from the gate on Long wall Street (except between 9.30pm. and 6am.) and then via sloping paths past the entrance to the Auditorium and thence Grove Buildings A and D. The Auditorium provides access to the main seating area without recourse to steps and contains an accessible toilet.

The Hall is accessible via a lift from the cloisters and there is a large, spacious bar (off the Cloister Quad). There are disabled toilet facilities near the bar. The shop is up 1 step and the Junior Common Room is accessed from this point, but is on the 1st floor. The Middle Common Room is also on the 1st floor, but is up a very steep, narrow flight of stairs, tapering at the bottom. The Library is up 2 flights of stairs at present, but there are plans to ramp the approach. The Law Library is in an accessible location in the Grove Buildings. If a tutor on the ground floor cannot be assigned to a disabled student, tutorials could be held in the student's room. The Chapel is accessible with no steps.

Accommodation:All undergraduates can live on site for the entire duration of their course; all rooms are provided with Internet connections and a telephone.

There are 47 en-suite rooms in the accommodationblock. BuildingD contains a spacious and well-equipped disabled room with en-suite toilet (415mm to top of seat) and dry-floor shower. There is level access to a kitchen on the ground floor, table clearance 620mm. In 1-7 Longwall Street there are two further undergraduate rooms with well equipped, en-suite facilities in both rooms; these rooms are located on the same corridor as the kitchen and laundry rooms. The Holywell Ford Quad graduate accommodation and the disabled facilities are smaller, but similarly equipped though without en-suite facilities. In all the college provides 4 adapted rooms, all situated on the ground floor.

Catering:Meals are available at competitive prices and there are plenty of kitchens for self-catering. There is also the option of self-catering in the kitchens included within the accommodation blocks and meals can be eaten from the Bar (off Cloister Quad).
