Mansfield College Website

Overview:Mansfield occupies a site a short distance from the Science Area and University Libraries, as well as city centre shops and services. College provision for students with disabilities is assessed and provided on a case-by-case basis. A specially adapted room in the Hands Building is the main provision for wheelchair users. A permanent ramp for accessing this building will be constructed in 2007, and in the meantime temporary arrangements would be made for level access. A portable loop provides support for hearing impaired students and other visitors, and the Chapel has a permanent loop. A wheelchair platform lift provides access to the Hall, and there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor of the main building.

College Site:The main entrance from Mansfield Road is through a large gate onto the bike park and a small car park. The surface is gravel and continues around the Quad, which is flat, but assistance may be required. The Porters' Lodge and pigeonholes are on the immediate left (+3 stairs) through double wooden doors (550mm). There is a passageway that is +3, +1 stairs on the left past the Porters' Lodge that leads through to the Hands Building, which has 12 ground floor bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is adapted and meets specifications. It includes an adapted toilet and a dry-floor shower.

The main building, in which most of the College facilities are to be found, is further to the right of the Porters' Lodge and is +1 stair. Once inside there is flat access to the Junior Common Room (which has a TV). The bar is situated in the basement down several steps. The laundry is -3 stairs and the Hall is +1, +1, +13 stairs and has benches. The Middle Common Room and law library are +10, +9 stairs and the main library is a further +11 stairs. A computer room is situated on the first floor of the Main Building. This room is inaccessible, however the college runs a computer loan scheme and priority would be given to a student with disabilities who could not access the computer room.

There is a hearing loop installed in the Chapel.

Accommodation:There is an adapted room in the Hands Building that has ramp access. All first year students are accommodated on site. Twelve ground floor bedrooms can be accessed in the Hands Building through a passageway (+3, +1 stairs). One of the bedrooms is adapted and meets specifications; it includes an adapted toilet and a dry-floor shower.Undergraduates living on site enjoy the convenience of en suite facilities in the Hands Building or more spacious and characterful rooms in the Marsh block. The Garden Building (24 bedrooms) opened in March 2006 has a wheelchair lift providing access to all rooms.

Graduates are housed on site or in a graduate annexe in the tower of the College hall of residence in Dawson Street, and in houses in East Oxford.

Offsite, the College has 2 student blocks on Cowley Road, Dawson Street, 1 of which has a full specification assisted room, the other has 1 adapted room. In the past the College has adapted a room for a deaf student by providing a visual 'doorbell' and a strobe light in the room connected to the Fire Alarm. We would be willing to repeat that arrangement.

Catering:The Dining Hall provides food at reasonable prices and has wheelchair access provided by a platform stair lift.
