Merton College Website

Overview: Merton is situated in a quiet cobbled street 200 metres to the south of High Street, and conveniently placed for the University libraries, lecture rooms and departments as well as the city centre.

College Site: The College's building stock is extremely diverse, ranging from 14th century to the present day. A number of buildings and staircases are presently accessible only by steep flights of steps. The College will make special arrangements to facilitate access to these and other areas. Special parking space can be made available in Merton Street, Jowett Walk, and Rose Lane.

Entrance to the College from Merton Street is level, but Merton Street is cobbled and the pavements are uneven in places. The Lodge Porter may be addressed through a window at street level. The entrance to the Lodge is one step up, and this becomes congested at times. There are two steps and a ramp descending from the Lodge into Front Quad. College staff will provide assistance when required. There is level or sloping access from Front Quad to all other Quads and Buildings (Fellows Quad, Mob Quad, St Albans Quad, Grove Buildings, Mob Quad Library and Computer Room and the College Bar), and to the Fellows Garden and Rose Lane Buildings at the rear of Fellows Quad. There is also level access to Rose Lane Buildings from Rose Lane.

Most internal staircases within all buildings throughout the College are one or two steps up or down. There are longer flights of steps at the entrances to the Hall, Old Warden's Lodgings (including library), and St Albans II-V (including the Junior Common Rooms). The College will make special arrangements to facilitate access to these areas.

Accommodation: Undergraduates can be housed for the duration of their studies in College and graduates can normally be housed for at least two years. College accommodation consists of bed-sitters or individual sets comprising a bedroom and study/living area. A large proportion of rooms have private shower or bath. Every College room on the main site and most rooms in Holywell Street and environs are connected to the University voice and data networks.

There is an adapted suite with bath facilities on the main College site. Other accommodation may be adapted, or allocated for a carer. The College will install special alarm and warning systems when required.

Catering: Breakfast (brunch on Sunday), lunch and dinner are served in Hall throughout the year, except when the College is closed at Christmas and Easter. A wide variety of food is available, including vegetarian options. The College will arrange for special diets and delivery of meals to rooms when required. Self-catering facilities are presently very limited on the main site, but all graduate and most undergraduateaccommodation in Holywell Street and Jowett Walk is provided with self-catering facilities.
