New College Website

Overview: New College is situated about 10 minutes from the city centre and the University Science Area. The historic character of the College buildings present some obstacles to with mobility difficulties: other than the Hall, few parts of New College above the ground floor can be reached without the use of stairs. The College is currently planning adaptations to anticipate the needs of students with disabilities and will respond positively to individual requirements.

College Site: There is a flat cobbled main entrance from Holywell Street that provides flat access to Holywell Quad. The Porters' Lodge is on the immediate right and has a window onto the main entrance with a bell at wheelchair height but the main desk and pigeonholes are in the first staircase to the right (+3 stairs).

The computer room is on the fourth floor of Staircase Two that is on Holywell Quad. The laundry room is +3, -7, +9, -1 stairs (handrail on the right) on the same staircase. The Library is further round Holywell Quad and is +11, +3 stairs through a set of wooden doors, it is situated on two levels and the Law and Classics sections are -11, -10 stairs (handrails right and left).

From Holywell Quad there is a passageway to Front Quad that is +3 stairs. From here the chapel has one ramped step and then +1 stair. It has a flat, polished marble floor. There is an alternative entrance into the College through a ramped wicket gate from New College Lane past the chapel - open from 11am to 5pm Easter to October or by arrangement. The Hall has some moveable chairs and is at the other end of Front Quad from the chapel. It is +22, +1 stairs (handrails left and right). Access to the Hall is via a lift.

Past these steps there is flat access into Garden Quad from which the bar is +3, +1 stairs, cobbles and the Junior Common Room is +2 stairs. It has a TV and moveable chairs. From Garden Quad it is +2, -1, +11, +11 stairs (with handrails right and left) to the Long Room. The direct route from Garden Quad to Holywell Quad is through various passageways, which have +2 stairs, but there is a gravel path that connects the two Quads and has no steps, although it is about 50m further.

Accommodation: All but a few undergraduates who want to live in College for the duration of their studies are able to do so. Around 80% of rooms are en suite or have facilities shared between two rooms. There is a set of rooms designed to accommodate a disabled student and carer, and the College will make adjustments to accommodate a student's particular needs. In addition, Holywell Quad has about twenty ground floor bedrooms but they are mostly +3 stairs.

If you have any particular requirement, for example, regarding access you should contact the Domestic Bursar on (01865) 279560.

Catering: Three meals a day are served in Hall, with breakfast and lunch being taken on a 'pay as you go' basis.
