Oriel College Website
Overview:Oriel is located near to the city
centre and Bodleian Library. The College has had a student and a member of
staff with mobility disabilities, but some of the historic buildings on the
main site may cause problems for students with serious mobility difficulties;
any prospective students with a mobility disability should first contact the
Academic Administrator, Ms Kirstie Fieldhouse (01865) 276520, or the Steward,
Mrs Jean Medd (01865) 286527.
College Site:There is no college car park,
but there are several disabled parking spaces in Oriel Square. The main
entrance is level with the pavement in Oriel Square. There is also an
alternative entrance (St Mary’s Gate) on Oriel Street. When the large College
gate is closed there is a bell for disabled users. The small door (width 680
mm) in St Mary’s Gate has an electronic release, but assistance and prior
notice is required to open the larger door. This entrance gives access directly
into the Third Quad. There is access between each Quad for a wheelchair user.
There are no steps, but there are sloped level changes and the ground surface
is uneven. There is one ground floor bedroom suitable for a wheelchair user in
Third Quad. There is also a ground floor guest room (+1 stair) in Second
Quad.
First Quad: The main access to the hall is
stepped (+8, +6 stairs). It is possible to avoid the steps by using a service
lift in the kitchen. The bar can also be accessed via the kitchen passageway,
so avoiding the -5 stairs.
Second Quad: Access to the library is via
steps. It is situated on the first, second and third floors. The laundry is on
the ground floor.
Third Quad: The Junior Common Room can be
accessed, but the TV room is in the basement.
Island Site: This site is situated off Oriel
Street. The Middle Common Room is on the first floor. The lecture theatre is on
the ground floor of the Harris Building and accessed via a sloping, uneven
cobbled route. Assistance may be required. There is a well-equipped toilet
suitable for wheelchair users. Assistance may be required with the double doors
to the lecture theatre itself.
Accommodation: All undergraduates live in
college accommodation if they wish and most undergraduates live on the main
site. Many of the newly renovated rooms here have en suite facilities. All of
the recently built rooms at James Mellon Hall (less than one mile from the main
site, just off Cowley Road) are single, with en suite facilities. This new
accommodation contains two ground floor rooms suitable for disabled students.
Car parking spaces for disabled students' cars are provided close to the
building. Almost all rooms have internet access and telephone lines.
Catering: Three cooked meals are provided in
Hall every day except Sunday when only dinner is prepared. College breakfasts
are popular and a variety of lunches are offered, including a well-stocked
salad bar, vegetarian options, and a choice of hot dishes.
