Pembroke College Website

Overview: Pembroke is situated just south of Carfax and the city centre, about twenty minutes on foot from the University Science Area and ten minutes from the Bodleian Library.

College Site:The main entrance to the College is flat from the cobbled road outside, and the Porters' Lodge is on the right, the pigeonholes on the left. From the Lodge to the Old Quad is -1 step, and a temporary ramp can be provided with given notice. The College Office is on the left (+2 stairs) with the Accounts Office one floor above (+12, +5 stairs). The College Shop/Pantry is on the next staircase to the left, but is inaccessible to wheelchairs. The Junior Common Room is opposite the entrance to the Pantry, but is currently inaccessible to wheelchairs (it is a Grade I listed building and application has been made to the Local Authority and to English Heritage for permission to provide access). Although the JCR is on two levels, a Listed Building application has been made to provide a ramp between the two levels. The TV room has flat access from the Old Quad. Upstairs on the staircase is the Middle Common Room (+12, +4 stairs). The College has been informed that Listed Building consent to improve the access will be refused. Along a passageway there is flat access to the main entrance of the Library. All the books are on the first floor or in the basement but the librarian is willing to fetch books as necessary.

From the Old Quad it is +3 stairs to Chapel Quad, but flat access is available from the street. The Hall is at the far end of Chapel Quad; it is +8, +6, +1 stairs and has moveable chairs inside. The Listed Buildings Officer has indicated that Listed Building Consent will not be given to provisions to improve access. The bar is just to the right of the Hall steps, and is down two slight steps.

From Chapel Quad there is level access to the North Quad off which there are many bedrooms. The North Quad and the student rooms off it are not currently accessible for wheelchairs. The College expects that the North Quad and a limited number of adapted rooms will be accessible by October 2003. An adapted toilet is accessible from the Chapel Quad.

Accommodation: Normally first year students live on the Main Site, second year students live out, and third year students live in the Geoffrey Arthur Building. However, the College can adapt these arrangements to meet specific needs including three/four years in College accommodation.

Main Site: The accommodation on the main site is traditionally arranged in staircases around four small Quads, intermingled with Fellows' studies and college offices and common room facilities in a small residential community.

Sir Geoffrey Arthur Building: Most third year students at Pembroke live in this accommodation block, which is on the other side of the river over Friars Wharf Bridge (in Longford Close off Whitehouse Road). There are no steps and the bridge is fully ramped. The block is about 800m/15 minutes walk south of the town centre. There are lots of parking spaces available and ramped access from the car park to the main entrance. The Porters' Lodge and pigeonholes are on the left of this entrance and have flat access. Further to the left is a laundry room and vending area, again with flat access; there is an adapted toilet outside these rooms. This staircase has a lift (door 700mm, length 1200mm, width 1000mm) that serves all levels of the building. There is another adapted toilet on the first floor. The building has two adapted bedrooms on different staircases, each of which has a door (750mm), and the adaptations include a low level desk, bed, light switches, and a sink. Each room has an adjacent adapted toilet and an adapted bathroom, and an adapted large kitchen with low cookers, tables etc.

A growing number of rooms on both the main site and the Geoffrey Arthur building have Ethernet points installed.

Catering: A full meal service is available in the Hall on the Main Site from Sunday evening to Friday evening during term-time; special diets and other food requirements are regularly catered for. Snacks can be purchased from the Pantry.
