The Queen's College Website
Overview: Queen's is situated on the High Street in the
centre of Oxford and is within a few minutes walk of the Bodleian Library and
the University's Science Area. The College has previously had students who were
wheelchair users, had visual and hearing impairments and a number of students
with dyslexia. Queen's will do whatever it can to provide equipment and
facilities for any disabled student admitted to the College, and has identified
a number of rooms that can be adapted for specific needs.
College Site: The main entrance to the
College is +6 stairs. The alternative accessible entrance is on Queen's Lane
and is situated directly at the rear of the College; a student can be given a
key to this entrance. Access is to the Back Quad. Planning permission is in
progress for a handrail to the Main Entrance. Additional handrails installed to
beer cellar and College offices to give left and right handrails.
Disabled toilet – there is a disabled toilet in Drawda building in Nun’s
garden which is level access.
Back Quad: Contains six staircases, all
but one of which are inaccessible; there is also flat access to a teaching
room. The lecture theatre is +1 stair. There is a moveable ramp to access the
lecture theatre, but it is always in place. Back Quad contains the Junior
Common Room, which is on Staircase five, +6 stairs. The laundry and toilet
facilities are in the basement down a flight of stairs. There is no disabled
toilet provision. The library is also situated in the Back Quad, and has flat
access to the ground floor, although assistance will be required with a heavy
door. The first floor and basement are inaccessible. The library is always
staffed, and partially on OLIS; there is an OLIS terminal.
Front Quad: From Back Quad, access to the
Front Quad is flat, though only half of the Quad can be accessed. On the half,
which can be accessed, the Beer Cellar is +2, -13 stairs (a handrail on the
right). The College office and bursary are inaccessible up flights of stairs.
The pigeonholes are +1 stair. A student can gain the attention of the porter if
they knock on the side door of the Porters' Lodge. The other side of Front
Quad, which is inaccessible, contains two small lecture rooms and the Middle
Common Room. The College Office and Bursary are inaccessible up flights of
stairs, but a porter will telephone the Bursary of Office and someone will come
downstairs. A disabled toilet will be installed during this year.
Queen’s Lane Quad refurbishment is due for completion in September 2007,
and will have a ground floor room for disabled students along with a lift to
other parts of the building.
Accommodation: All undergraduate students
are offered accommodation throughout their course, either on the main site, or
in one of the annexes. However, independent kitchen facilities are only
available in graduate rooms off-site.
The College has four accommodation annexes in which it houses first and
second year undergraduates, and graduates. These rooms do not have any specific
adaptations. In Back Quad is an adapted room with en suite bathroom and toilet,
which meets specifications. This is accessible via staircase four, using a
temporary wooden ramp that can be obtained on request; assistance is required
with the heavy door, which the ramp leads to.
Catering: Breakfast lunch and dinner are
provided at cost, but we do not oblige our students to eat all their meals in
college. The Dining Hall has flat access, but Breakfast and lunch have canteen
service and assistance may be required when carrying a tray; evening meal has
waiter service. Special needs are catered for, but advanced notice is
required.
