University College Website
Overview: University College is located on
the High Street, between 10 and 15 minutes walk from most University
departments, Libraries and the University Science Area.
The College has accommodated students with various disabilities and is
willing to make reasonable adjustments to improve accessibility. Contact the
Senior Tutor, Mrs Clare Drury, for information.
College Site: The main entrance on the
High Street is up several steep steps. The alternative accessible entrance is
to the left of the main entrance, on Logic Lane; this entrance, although
cobbled, is level going though assistance may be required.
From the Logic Lane entrance the Radcliffe Quad can be accessed, it is flat
and to the right. From this Quad the College Office is +1 stair. The Radcliffe
Quad leads to the Front Quad, which contains the Hall, Porters' Lodge, Chapel,
Beer Cellar, Junior Common Room and further accommodation. The Hall has a main
entrance, which is up several steps. The alternative entrance is via a lift,
which meets specifications and leads through double doors with which assistance
may be required. The Chapel is accessible. The Beer Cellar is situated in the
basement down a staircase, and is inaccessible. The Junior Common Room is
situated on the first floor up a set of steep steps, and is inaccessible. The
Porters' Lodge is up a few steps, there is visual contact but the window is
quite high, assistance may be required to attract attention. The pigeonholes
are +1 stair, in a room opposite the lodge.
The Library, lecture room and the Middle Common Room are off the Fellows'
Garden. The usual access is via a passageway, which is +2, +2, -4, -1 stairs.
Access on level going can be arranged between the main quad and the Fellows'
garden via the SCR. The library is then +4 stairs and has flat access
throughout the ground floor. Access to the second floor is via a steep set of
stairs. The library is a lending library, on OLIS, and is staffed throughout
the daytime. The library is open 24 hours. The lecture room is behind the
library to the right and are up several stairs and inaccessible. The Middle
Common Room is to the left of the library and is accessed via a steep spiral
staircase, which is inaccessible. A separate seminar room is situated off Logic
Lane called the Goodhart Seminar Room and is up a spiral staircase, which is
inaccessible. However, the Swire Seminar room is fully accessible. Most of the
staircases now have handrails. A level footpath has been constructed in the
Fellows Garden and greatly improved accessibility at the back of the
College.
Accommodation: All undergraduates and most
graduates are offered accommodation for all three years of their course and
students reading four-year courses can usually be housed in their fourth year.
Some undergraduates and graduates are housed in an annexe in Staverton Road
about 1.5 miles from the city centre; one building at the annexe is accessible
and has a fully accessible room with en suite bathroom to current
specifications. The common room, dining room and garden are all accessible on
level going. All rooms are networked for computer use and have telephone
points.
There are two bedrooms allocated for students with disabilities on site. The
first is +1 stair and through a corridor of width 750mm, that leads to a large
room. The desk clearance in the room is height 700mm, width 560mm. There is an
en suite bathroom with toilet. The door opens inward into a narrow corridor so
assistance may be required with the door. The shower is +1 stair. The toilet is
placed in a narrow width 1200mm corridor, and has handrails left and right,
which are very far from the toilet seat. There is a kitchen with adequate table
clearance but the tabletops are very high. There is a microwave. On the same
staircase is a laundry and gym room in the basement, down a flight of steep
stairs, which are inaccessible.
The second room is +1 stair and leads to a large room with en suite
bathroom. None of the facilities in the bathroom meet specification. There is a
toilet with no handrails and a bath of usual height. There is an electric
wheelchair recharger outside the room a few yards away from the staircase D.
The other staircases off the Quad provide accommodation that is
inaccessible.
Catering: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are
provided every day in term time on a cafeteria system; vegetarian meals and
salads are always available. Certain special diets can be catered for with
notice. If you enjoy a more leisurely kind of meal with your friends, there is
Formal Hall six nights a week. You can choose to eat formally or informally and
you are only charged for the meals you eat.
