Wadham College Website

Overview: Wadham College is situated on the corner of Parks Road and Holywell Street, across the road from the Bodleian Library, five minutes from the University Science Area and ten minutes from most of the city centre. The College has had student wheelchair users in the past.

College Site: Wadham has a mixture of old and new buildings so access is variable and an independent manual wheelchair user may require assistance with ramps and doors around the College.

The main entrance from Parks Road (locked at midnight) is flat. The Porters' Lodge and pigeonholes, on the right, are +2 stairs (ramped) and through a door (700mm) with handrails on both sides. There is flat access from here to the Main Quad off which the Hall is +5, +8 stairs (benches and tables inside). There is an alternative entrance to the College; with flat access through a gate from Holywell Street into the Back Quad this is the main night entrance.

From Main Quad there is a flat passageway to the garden. The Middle Common Room is +3, +17 stairs (handrail on the on left). There is a lift for disabled users from Main Quad/Back Quad passageway to Middle Common Room (first floor). From Main Quad there is ramped access to Back Quad; assistance may be required. There is ramped access to the bar, which has split levels. There is a female toilet (door 860mm, transfer space 860mm, handrails and low sink). From the bar there is ramped access to the refectory, which serves informal meals on a self-service basis. It has moveable furniture. The Wadham Theatre is -17 stairs (handrails on both sides) from the bar, but can also be accessed via a lift, albeit with some difficulty. Prior notice is necessary. The laundry is -9 stairs from the ground floor of the Goddard Building.

The Junior Common Room, library and computer room are on the first floor of the Goddard Building. From the Back Quad the Junior Common Room is +4, +15 stairs (handrails on both sides) or it is +19 stairs (spiralling) from Junior Common Room Quad, outside the refectory. Alternatively there is a lift (door 750mm, width 1100mm, length 1500mm) inside the building, which has ramped access from Back Quad or from the works entrance off Savile Road (small car park). From the lift on the first floor the Junior Common Room is +1, -1 stairs, with a TV and moveable chairs. Also from the first floor the library has ramped access but is on a split level (+9 stairs, handrails on both sides) and the computer room is +2, -9, -9, -9 stairs (handrail on the on left).

Accommodation: All undergraduates undertaking three and four year courses live in the College itself in their first and final years. The College's self-catering complex, Merifield, is about a mile away in North Oxford. All student rooms have Ethernet connections.

There is an adapted ground floor bedroom and wheelchair accessible toilet (lateral transfer rail only) with dry-floor shower on staircase 16, off Back Quad. Assistance may be required with the ramp up into the staircase.

Catering: During term, dinner for all students on the main site is in Hall or in the Refectory. It is an informal occasion to which friends from outside may be invited. There are at least two student guest nights each term, where students are encouraged to invite guests for more formal dining occasions with enhanced menus. From Monday to Friday, during term, breakfast and lunch are available to students living in or out on a cash, à la carte, basis in the New Refectory. Students living out (either at Merifield or in private accommodation) may also purchase tickets for dinner in college. All meals are charged at subsidised, modest prices. On Saturdays brunch is served in the New Refectory.

All Merifield flats have fully fitted kitchens and lounge/diners, and there are a number of student kitchens on the main site for individual use. Special arrangements are available for vegetarian, vegan and other special dietary needs.
