Wolfson College Website
Overview: Wolfson is a graduate college located in modern
buildings in North Oxford. It is about 20 minutes from the University Science
Area, and 30 minutes from the city centre.
College Site: There is a large car park from which there is
flat access to the main entrance, Porters' Lodge and pigeon holes. From the
Porters' Lodge there is flat access to virtually all the rooms.
A flat access passageway leads from the Main Quad (to the left and rear of
the Porters' Lodge) to a lavatory (door 850mm, transfer space 900mm, fixed
handrails), to the buttery, and a TV Room. The computer room is also off this
passageway, but it is +1, +1 stairs. Straight ahead from the Porters' Lodge
there are +8 stairs to the Dining Hall, but there is a lift (door 760mm width
1220mm length 1640mm), which gives flat access to this and to all other levels
of the main building. The Haldane Room and the Hall (which has moveable chairs
and an adjustable table) are on level H and have flat access. There is also
flat access to the lower common room and the lower library from level three.
Level four gives flat access to the upper common room.
From level one, the bar is -1 stair and there is flat access to the laundry,
which is 70m from the lift. There is a satellite TV room in the Main Quad,
which has flat access from the Porters' Lodge.
Accommodation: Accommodation, either in college or in
adjoining out-buildings is offered to all students and their families in their
first year. Accommodation consists mainly of three and four study bedroom
apartments, each with a communal living area, kitchen, bathroom and shower.
There are also several married flats, and two and three bedroom houses for
families.
Wolfson is well endowed with adapted accommodation. There are three adapted
ground floor bedrooms in the Gandy Building, with adapted switches, low
keyholes and low beds. These rooms have an adjacent bathroom, door 800mm, a low
sink, a flat access shower with a seat, and lavatory with transfer space 800mm.
There is also a kitchen nearby. In the Main Building there are two flats
(bedroom, sitting room, toilet, bathroom, kitchen) with flat access. One of
them has a Braille cooker and low switches although the toilet and bath are not
adapted. One of the Guest Rooms also has adapted facilities.
Catering: The Dining Hall is open for lunch and dinner from
Monday to Friday and for Saturday lunch throughout the year, except when the
College closes for about ten days at both Christmas and Easter. Breakfast is
not provided. Meal charges to graduate students are moderate, and subsidised by
the College. All the residents in single rooms have access to kitchens. The
married and family accommodation is self-contained with kitchens and
bathrooms.
