This is a public building, based about five minutes from the town centre, and perhaps ten from the University Science Area. The approach is from Beaumont Street and there is public disabled parking in the surrounding area. Access into the building is via ramps or stairs. There is a Gallery Guide, which gives information on the layout of the museum indicating where stairs are. Although there are changes in level, most of the facilities can be accessed via an alternative route (except: coins, medals, music and antiquities – a problem that should be addressed by 2004).

The lower ground floor has an accessible toilet, cafe and lecture room. Access is level, but assistance might be required with doors. An accessible lift goes to all floors except the mezzanine levels, and for those stairs have to be negotiated. Access is generally good and the staff will help wherever possible.

The Libraries contents (apart from coins, medals, music and antiquities) were moved to the Sackler Library in October 2002 and no access to the Sackler Library exists from the Ashmolean Museum. Only the Coin Room Library remains located within the museum, but this cannot be accessed except by stair. Applications for books should be made via the Sackler Librarian on 01865 278087.
