All undergraduate students studying Chemistry need access to the facilities
in this building. Some graduates also need access to the building depending on
their research area.
There are four entrances to this building but the front entrance on South
Parks Road is never used. The main entrance is +3 stairs and through two sets
of double doors. Another entrance is used by students going to lectures and
leads to another set of double doors to get to the ground floor level. The
final entrance is ramped up to double doors that can only be opened from the
inside.
The reception is on the ground floor opposite the main entrance and through
door 690mm. A steep ramp leads from here to the ground floor coffee room, the
research labs, and the old lift, which is very small and does not meet
specifications; this lift gives access to all floors. There is another more
convenient lift (door 700mm, width 1230mm, length 1140mm) by the reception,
which also gives access to all floors.
The first floor lecture theatre has double doors followed by -3 stairs and
then another set of double doors. There is a stair lift, which covers these
steps, and although the key can be obtained from reception it can only really
be used with assistance. Once inside there is tiered seating but there is space
for at least one wheelchair at the end of the front row. The lecturer's table
is on the flat. The lab on this floor has double doors and -4 stairs but there
is another stair lift, which gives flat access. There are further double doors
and there is plenty of turning space inside. There is flat access to the second
and third year teaching lab via three sets of double doors and one door
(780mm). Inside there is plenty of turning space. The workbenches are height
800mm but have cupboards underneath them. The instrument room has a door of
width 690mm. The first year teaching lab is -5 stairs from the second and third
year teaching lab and has double doors.
The library, which is only open to graduates and fourth year part II
students is on the second floor and has flat access via the lift and two sets
of double doors. Although there is no full-time librarian there is a secretary
available to give assistance.
Organic Chemistry will be relocating all of its research function to a new
chemistry research laboratory, and it is expected that the transfer will take
place during September and October 2003; the teaching laboratories will remain
in the current Dyson Perrins Laboratory.
