The Chinese Studies Institute is 10-15 minutes walk from both the city centre and the University Science Area. The main entrance from Walton Street is stepped and gives access to a ground floor reception area. There is an unmarked alternative entrance, at the rear of the building. There is a path to the car park, this is quite rough and steep, and assistance may be required. There is then gentle ramped access to a basement door, which is locked but there is an intercom system with which assistance is summoned. The door opens directly into the library.

The Library itself is staffed and has flat access. There is a photocopier on this floor, manageable for the use of a wheelchair user, and an accessible toilet in the basement, all of which meet specifications. There is the possibility of a carrel (study area) being designated for disabled students' use, particularly as tutorial rooms are inaccessible. The Common Room is also in the basement, but this is accessed via the main door of the library, which has a card swipe at height 1450mm. There are no lifts in the building, so the other two floors are only accessible by a staircase, which has a handrail on the right. The first floor contains language labs, tutorial rooms and staff offices. The second floor contains two small seminar rooms and two large seminar rooms. The second floor of the building is shared with Linguistics and Philology.
