A wheelchair user could be manoeuvred through the main entrance (+3 deep and well spaced steps) and there is a bell but there is an alternative ramped entrance around the back of the building via the car park with steep incline from the pavement. There are no signs and no handrails up the ramps. Two other ramps give direct access to the library. There is an accessible toilet inside the ramped entrance but space is restricted at present as it is used for storage; stored materials could be moved if required. The lecture theatre has a loop system, but no space for wheelchairs at the top (ground floor access), access to space at front of lecture theatre may be gained through the Fire Exit. Ground floor – access to labs is tight and assistance may be required with the doors. The library is staffed, desk clearance 630mm. Staff Common Room used for seminars. Access to the first floor is by stairs only, to classrooms and computer room, but a disabled lift is to be installed during the long vacation of 2003 that will allow wheelchair access. Access is possible around the ground floor facilities for a wheelchair user, although help may be required with the doors. |
