Department of Human Anatomy and Genetics Website

This department is used mainly by pre-clinical medical undergraduates and by some graduates. If a student is applying to study for a medicine degree the department advises the student to think about the other departments it will be necessary to study in. Further information can be obtained from the Departmental Administrator on Oxford 272169.

There is a car park at the front of the building, which has no provision for students or disabled access. However the department would arrange for a student with a disability to park once they had sought permission.

There are two entrances into the building. The main entrance is at the front of the building and is +7 stairs, handrail on the left at height 990mm. The other entrance to the left of the main entrance is used mainly as a goods entrance. It is down a fairly steep slope and does not meet specification. The double doors, which meet specification, are usually locked, and so assistance is required. However, students who wish to use this entrance could be given a key.

Once inside the building from the goods entrance the lift is down a fairly steep slope. The doors to the lift are very heavy and assistance would be required. The buttons inside and outside the lift are at a height of 1500mm. The lift dimensions are 1000mm door width, 1470mm depth, and 1200mm width. Once in the lift the ground floor and first floor can be accessed. Only one wing of the second floor can be accessed by the lift, and is mainly used by graduates. The other wing is accessed via a flight of stairs. The ground floor has flat access from the lift to an undergraduate teaching room, and four smaller teaching rooms. There are toilet facilities on every floor. There is an accessible facility in the basement for people with disabilities.

The main problem throughout the entire building is that all the doors are heavy fire doors, with handles that are high. All the doors apart from most toilet facilities are wide enough. In the undergraduate teaching room the tabletops are at a height of 710mm. The department could however provide lower height benches. All three smaller teaching rooms are accessible and they have varying table heights. The lecture theatre is on the second half of the ground floor. This half is +4 stairs with a new non-slip ramp and handrails. It is 800mm width although the gradient does not meet specification. The lecture theatre has flat access to the front only once the +4 stairs have been negotiated. There is room at the front for a wheelchair and the back of the lecture theatre is +18 stairs. There is no loop system for students with hearing impairments. There is good natural light.

The first floor contains the Dissecting Room and has flat access from the lift. However, the dissecting tables are designed for standing height, so these are too high for a wheelchair user and it would be difficult to change the height of these tables.
