Reception

+ more

Main reception – To get to the main reception, come through the accessible entrance and follow the corridor around to your left.  The reception desk will be on your left hand side.  There is a hearing support system, but no reduced height section.  It is possible to see over the counter in a wheelchair though.  There is a small waiting area opposite and to one side of reception.  Please take care, as this is at the top of some steps, and there is not much room to park a wheelchair.  The space has several chairs and a low coffee table.

Course registration – The course registration space is behind reception, and is where you will sign in for the training you are taking.  To get there, go through the door marked ‘Thames Suite’ on the right hand side of the reception desk.  This door is very heavy, and has small vision panels.  However, it is usually held open when a course or event is taking place.  Turn right through the next set of double doors to reach the course registration area, and the registration desk is on the right-hand side.  A hearing support system can be provided here if requested.

There are multiple staircases in the building, but all follow the same pattern, with a bannister on the side furthest from the wall, and contrasting tactile nosings.

Doors

+ more

While the level entrance door is powered, many internal doors are very heavy.  The doors leading from the reception and the helpdesk area both have vision panels, although the ones in the reception doors are too high to see through when using a wheelchair.  One side of the double doors leading to the teaching area is propped open.  Doors to the teaching rooms themselves are very heavy and close quickly, but these are usually held open at the start and end of classes.

Teaching Rooms

+ more

There are five computer teaching rooms available, each with a very similar setup.  Banks of computers are arranged on desks which are a suitable height for everyone, and there is a mix of standard and office chairs available (as well as some chairs with arms).  IT Services have access to a couple of height adjustable desks – please mention on your booking form if you would like to use one.  The teaching rooms have computers arranged in ‘pods’ rather than rows around the edges of the room.  The Cherwell room is used for the teaching of Mac courses.  All rooms have dimmable lighting, but there is quite a lot of background noise from the air-conditioning systems.

Help Desk

+ more

The Help Desk area is no longer a drop-in service, but this is where you will bring your equipment if you are asked to bring it down to Banbury Road.  To get there, go through the door from reception marked ‘Thames Suite’.  The help desk is straight ahead of you as you enter.  The counter is a suitable height for everyone, and there is a height adjustable desk and hearing support system available.  There is a waiting area on the left side of the door with a low coffee table and armchairs.  Unfortunately, the ‘kiosk’ PCs in the helpdesk area are too high for wheelchair users to reach.  There are bar stool height chairs available to use at these computers.

Common Spaces

+ more

In the course registration area there are some armchairs and a coffee table immediately on the left hand side as you enter.  There is plenty of space to park a wheelchair, and most of the refreshment options are fully accessible, although some buttons on the vending machines might be high for some.  If there are refreshments provided as part of your course, these will usually be set out on the table at the right hand side of the registration area, which is at a convenient height for everybody.

There is a small waiting area opposite and to one side of the main reception.  Please take care, as this is at the top of some steps, and there is not much room to park a wheelchair.  The space has several chairs and a low coffee table.
