Summertown House
This property is on the Banbury Road, approximately two miles north of the city centre and has access through Apsley Road. It is well served by buses from the centre and there is a cycle lane along much of Banbury Road. There is a local shopping centre, primary schools and municipal park all within a mile.
Please note that there will be major refurbishment work from August 2013 in the East Block. Next year from August 2014 (date to be confirmed) there will be new studios, and 1 and 2 bed flats available.
The North and West blocks at Summertown House (flats 1-54) have 1-bed flats for couples (and one child up to the age of 2 from 1 August 2012) and studios for single tenants.
Set in the grounds is an old stone house (referred to as the Mansion). Located in the Mansion is the caretaker's office and facilities for the use of residents on site.
Bicycles
There are locked cycle sheds at the rear of the site.
Car parking
There is limited car parking at Summertown House. The caretaker runs a waiting list which you can join when you collect your keys.
Cleaning
Tenants are expected to keep their flats clean and to provide their own cleaning materials. A vacuum cleaner and ironing board for use by all tenants is available to borrow from the small kitchen by the caretakers office.
Common Room
The common room is located in the Mansion.
Computer connection
All rooms and flats have a computer connection to the University Network. Please note connection must be by CABLE only - WIFI is not permitted.
Electricity
All tenants pay for the electricity used by quarterly account. There is one meter recording the electricity consumed in the flat at the day rate.
Furnishing/Equipment
The flats are equipped with the basic furniture required, including an electric cooker with four rings, grill and oven and a fridge/freezer. Tenants must provide their own bed linen (including pillows), crockery, cutlery, cooking and household items. There is a Newcomers' Club which helps newly-arrived wives, husbands and partners of members of the University.
Heating
Flats and studios in the North and West Blocks have gas central heating and hot water provided by a combination boiler controlled by the tenant which is included in the rent.
Laundry
The coin-operated laundry is situated behind the Mansion. It contains four washing machines and three dryers. This facility is available 24 hours daily. There are also three rotary clothes lines on the grass area nearest to the laundry. Washing machines and tumble dryers are not allowed in the flats.
Telephone
The rooms and flats have a telephone connection via the University Network which gives free calls to other University extensions. The cost of the telephone line rental and all calls outside the University network (plus VAT) is charged quarterly.
