Policies

Equality Act, 2010

The Equality Act protects the rights of individuals and advances equality of opportunity for all. In addition, the University has particular responsibilities under the Public Sector Equality Duty to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.

Equality policy

Every member of the collegiate University is bound by the University's Equality Policy , while members of colleges are also bound by their college equality policy. The equality policy applies to all aspects of university life, including admissions and recruitment, learning and teaching, accommodation, the physical environment and the provision of services.

Harassment

The University is committed to fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equality, values diversity and maintains a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all students are respected. Harassment or victimisation is regarded as unacceptable behaviour and is not tolerated in any form. Disabled students

Common Framework for Supporting Disabled Students

Responsibility for meeting the needs of disabled students is shared across the collegiate University, with four parts taking a leading role: the Disability Advisory Service, the colleges, departments/faculties, and the Proctors. Together, they support disabled students throughout their University career, including the admissions process, teaching and learning, examinations, and wider social and recreational provision.

The Common Framework for Supporting Disabled Students defines and builds on current good practice and sets out the guiding principles that underpin the procedures for supporting disabled students. It aims to improve the sharing of information, clarity of roles and responsibilities, and consistency of provision.

Disability Advisory Service

The Disability Advisory Service is here to provide information and advice on disability issues at Oxford and facilitate support for students with disabilities. This includes, for example, students with sensory or mobility impairments, long-term health conditions, specific learning difficulties, autistic spectrum conditions or mental health difficulties.       

Exams and assessment

The University has a responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled students are not placed at a ‘substantial disadvantage’ in comparison with other students. This may include making adjustments to assessment requirements where this would not compromise the academic standards of the course.

University provision for families and childcare includes:

Nurseries and childcare

The University Childcare Services team coordinates admissions to the nurseries and provides support and advice to all parents. Nursery users benefit from subsidised fees (below the market rate) while students are a priority group when places are allocated.

In addition, four of the colleges operate their own nurseries: Balliol, St Anne’s, Somerville and Wolfson.

The University also works in partnership with a number of holiday playschemes.

Campaigns and societies

Oxford University Student Union (OUSU)

All students are members of the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU), which works across the collegiate University providing student representation at University level and supporting college common rooms.

OUSU supports a wide range of campaigns focusing on specific equality issues, including:

  • Campaign for Racial Awareness and Equality
  • Women’s Campaign
  • Disabled Students’ Campaign
  • LGBTQ Campaign
  • Mature Students’ Campaign
  • International Students’ Campaign

The campaigns aim to:

  • Raise awareness among the student population
  • Lobby for changes to policy
  • Provide space for discussion and mutual support
  • Produce publications
