A key element of reducing the negative and increasing the positive environmental impacts of the University is the engagement of all staff, students and stakeholders.

There are four main engagement programmes: 

  • Green Impact (staff and students) 
  • Student Switch Off (students) 
  • Carbon Innovation Programme (staff and students
  • Living Lab (staff and students) –the aim of Living Lab is to create a test bed to link innovate world leading research to practical projects within the University estate to support programmes such as the University’s Carbon Reduction Programme. Events and training

Training and events are run throughout the year on a wide range of subjects including carbon and energy, environmental risk and legal compliance and safe cycling. Visit our training and events page for upcoming sessions.  

We participate annually in Low Carbon Oxford Week and work in partnership to offer the Big Green Treasure Hunt,  an interactive tour of the city, highlighting the sustainability features of the University and other organisations. The hunt is open to the public annually during Low Carbon Oxford week, information can be found on the Low Carbon Oxford Week website.

The Environmental Sustainability team attends student and staff welcome events. 

You can keep up to date via the teams Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as the team’s blog.

If you wish to hear more from the team email sustainability@admin.ox.ac.uk and the team will add you to either the staff or student mailing lists to hear about volunteering and training opportunities.

Student representation

A representative from Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) attends, provides a report to, and plays an active role in each meeting of the Sustainability Steering Group at each meeting.

In addition members of the Environmental Sustainability team attend the Environment and Ethics (E&E) Representative meetings, and the team hosts knowledge-share events for representatives periodically.

Contact your common rooms Environment and Ethics representative or equivalent, the Chair of E&E or OUSU’s VP Charities and Community, in addition please contact the Environmental Sustainability team sustainability@admin.ox.ac.uk directly as well.

Trade unions

A member of the Environmental Sustainability team annually attends meetings to review environmental sustainability initiatives with the University & College Union (UCU), representing academic and academic-related staff, and the Joint Committee for University Staff (JCUSS), which considers matters relating to the terms and conditions of employment of support staff.

The meetings reviewing sustainability are often, but not necessarily, held in around November each year. Minutes from the meetings are available via the above links.

Sector presence

The University is a member of and reports to or meets regularly with international, national, regional and local organisations to support the promotion of sustainability and to share best practice.
