Business Rates
The University deals with rating of the functional estate as a whole. The purpose is to ensure the rates paid are minimised. Many of the ratings assessments relate to sites rather than individual buildings. The University also receives charitable and transitional relief on business rates which further reduces the rates liability. The University retains specialist consultants to advise and negotiate on all rating matters.
The valuation of properties for rating purposes is dealt with by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). They produce the assessments used by Local Authorities for billing purposes. The VOA only has to serve notice on the property concerned, but generally sends notices to Estates Services and the University's advisors.
Any notices concerning valuations, or forms sent requiring completion for rates to be assessed, should be sent to the Information Management Team. If an officer from the Valuation Office arrives unexpectedly to look around a property, they should be asked to arrange an appointment through the Information Management Team (IMT).
| If you have any queries regarding rates, do not contact the VOA or Local Authority directly. You must refer your queries through the Information Management Team (IMT). |
