Old Road Campus Research Building

Background
The Old Road Campus Research Building brought together the following institutions:
- Institute of Biomedical Engineering
- The Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology & Biology
- The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
- The Department of Clinical Pharmacology
- Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine
- Structural Genomics Consortium
- The Jenner Institute
- The Knowledge Centre medical library
in a state of the art research laboratory building to help establish Oxford as one of the leading cancer research centres in Europe.
The Building
The Research Building provides 10,000m2 of mixed-use accommodation on four floors, including a basement, three upper levels, and a roof plant room on level 4.
Every accommodation floor provides specialist laboratories together with associated write-up areas and office and administration space.
The basement houses specialist equipment rooms including workshops together with laboratory support facilities.
The external green curtain wall cladding façade incorporates brise soleil with high performance glazing and each of the three atria have floating cast concrete staircases supported from the main floor levels.
Programme
Building construction commenced in March 2006 and the Research Building, including the specialist fit-out, was completed in October 2007.
Key stakeholders
A diverse range of funders contributed to the project with major contributions from Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. The funders met the construction cost of the building together with the specialist fit-out works.

The building achieved a commendation in 2009 from The Concrete Society for exemplary use of concrete.
