Energy purchasing

The University aims to get the best possible prices for gas and electricity. The University and Colleges purchase energy together. From 2010 they will use a flexible purchasing contract for gas and electricity to achieve the best price and avoid market spikes.

The University is committed to purchasing 100% 'green' energy. The current green energy contract is from off-site hydro-electric power generated in Scotland (by Scottish and Southern Energy).

Although the University has a green energy contract with Scottish and Southern Energy, the University's electricity is actually generated by the local Didcot Power Station (which is fossil fuel-powered).

Therefore, while the University is supporting and investing in green energy, it still needs to reduce its energy consumption and emissions. It's worth noting that the UK government doesn't allow green electricity from off-site renewable sources to be factored into CO2 emissions calculations.

If you have any questions about the energy contract please email the University Sustainability Team.
