The University of Oxford has more than 200 departments and units, many of whom contribute to a diverse portfolio of research relating to the environment, including the Environmental Change Institute and the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment.

In 2006 the University became one of the six core partners for Phase 2 of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the UK's principal consortium mobilizing climate change science and policy research.

The University is part of the International Alliance of Research Universities Sustainable Campus Initiative. The IARU's ten leading research universities have pledged to work together, where appropriate, on research that broadens the understanding of climate change and related sustainability issues.

The University's Sustainability team offers departments funding for energy efficiency projects of up to £50,000 for projects with a payback period of 5 years or less.

The University began purchasing renewable electricity in 2001 and in 2004 switched to 100% green electricity.
