Second building opens on ROQ site

The Mathematical Institute opens its doors on Monday 16th September

While not offically open until Thursday 3rd October, more staff are moving into the Mathematical Institute on Monday 16th September. The Mathematical Institute is the second building to move onto the ROQ site - the Radcliffe Humanities building being the first.

The new Mathematical Institute will provide workspace for a diverse community of more than 500 mathematical researchers and support staff. It will be the centre of academic life for approximately 900 undergraduates.

Theory meets reality

Mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose uses his 1974 non-repeating pattern discovery in tiles on new Mathematical Institute site.

The paving in front of the Andrew Wiles building is constructed from just two different diamond-shaped granite tiles, each adorned identically with stainles steel circulate arcs. The paving, which has circular adornments, was designed by mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose in 2012. This non-repeating pattern was disocvered by Roger Penrose in 1974.
