Iffley Road Sports Centre – Information Update

The University of Oxford was granted planning permission for the renovation of Iffley Road Sports Centre in October 2013.

An ongoing fundraising campaign is getting closer to its target and it is now hoped that construction work will begin on site this summer.

While there is no change to the approved plans for the scheme since the original planning application, the University has decided to take a phased approach to construction. This change in approach requires the University to submit a Section 73 application to Oxford City Council for approval.

The application will change the wording of the conditions attached to the planning permission to enable the development to be constructed in two phases. The phased approach will not, however, result in any change to the external appearance of the building, or any alteration of the facilities provided in the previously approved scheme.

The first stage of works will focus on the North West corner of the approved sports centre and is expected to take 12 months to build. This phase includes the construction of the new four court sports hall, associated changing facilities and a multi-purpose activity room for fitness classes which would be open to the local community. The second phase of construction work would cover the remainder of the approved scheme and further updates in relation to this will be provided at a later date.

Prime Construction has been chosen as the project’s principal contractor and both Prime and the University of Oxford are committed to carrying out the construction works in a way that will cause as little disruption to local residents as possible.
