Topping-out ceremony for new gym

A ‘topping-out’ ceremony on 27 July marked the completion of the highest point of the structure of the new Gallie-Lewis-Dean Gym (GLD) at the University’s sports ground at Iffley Road.

The GLD will be a multi-purpose activity room and is part of the first phase of the long-awaited redevelopment of the sports facilities. It will be used by the Oxford University Amateur Boxing Club (OUABC) as well as providing up to 22 exercise classes per week for students, staff and members of the local community.

Its name honours three former OUABC head coaches – Alf Gallie, Percy Lewis and Henry Dean. Percy and Henry, supported by family and friends, donned safety boots, high-vis jackets and hard hats to get a tour of the new facilities from Project Manager David Jobbins of Bidwells and Jonathan Brock from Beard Construction.

The GLD is due to open at the end of October along with a new rec eption area, café and changing rooms. The rest of the £9.3million building, including the Acer Nethercott Sports Hall, will follow in March next year.
