Teaching begins in modular buildings

The first students are now being taught in the modular buildings recently installed on the sports field near the University Club, with Biochemistry undergraduates receiving instruction in the specialist teaching labs there.

Oxford is consistently ranked as one of the top two or three UK universities for biological sciences. Teaching laboratories for the two largest degrees in this area – Biological Sciences (within the Department of Zoology) and Biochemistry – were in the Tinbergen Building, and needed to be re-provided following its closure. The temporary modular structures, installed by Portakabin on behalf of Estates Services, will meet this need until a permanent replacement for the Tinbergen is available.

Laboratory teaching is central to both Biochemistry and Biological Sciences courses: students not only gain an understanding of biological mechanisms, but also learn transferable skills such as experimental design and analysis.
