Student Switch Off

Student Switch Off is an energy-saving competition between Oxford colleges with loads of prizes up for grabs. Competitions include photo challenges and quizzes. They run each term and are quick and easy to take part in.

Thousands of students at Oxford take part each year. Oxford University has had the highest level of engagement in the country! If you take part, you're in the running for prizes for you and your college and £250 cash towards your summer garden party.

To pledge your support sign-up on the Student Switch-off NUS website. You can also like the Facebook page, follow them on Twitter (@EcoPowerRanger) or @OxfordEnvSust and/or Instagram or via #oxfordsso to keep up to date with competitions and to follow the leaderboard.

Become a Student Ambassador for the campaign. Receive free training and extra and support. Email sustainability@admin.ox.ac.uk about becoming an Ambassador.  

The campaign is run at Oxford by the Environmental Sustainability team but nationally by the National Union of Students.

Green Impact

Green Impact brings together staff and students across the University to play an active role in improving the sustainable practices of their office, building, department or college.

Students may either support or run their own Green Impact team. In addition students can train as project assistants and auditors. After your training session you will get the opportunity to put your new skills into practice.

Sustainability skills bank

We have launched the Sustainability Skills Bank.

The bank brings together the fab skills of students with small sustainable projects. Staff and students can learn from each other, gain skills and get tasks done. It's a positive experience and a win win for everyone involved.

Micro-Internships and internships

The University’s Environmental Sustainability team offer various internships. To hear about opportunities sigh up to the student mailing list via sustainability@admin.ox.ac.uk. Applications are made through the Career Service’s. The team and Green Impact teams also makes use of micro-internships and student consultancy services all run through Career’s Service.

E&E Campaigns

The E&E Campaign is the largest environmentally focused group in the University. Their goals are to make the University a greener, more ethical place, to support individuals in their efforts.

There is also the chance to become an E&E committee member, to get involved or find out more information about any positions, please email E&E Secretary (eande.secretary@ousu.org). Like their Facebook page to stay up to date.

Student societies

There are a number of active environmentally related societies and clubs out there, a full list is available here. Look out for the Oxford Climate Society, Oxford Waste Society and Nature Conservation Society. Whatever society you are in consider the environmental impacts of these groups as well, small changes can make a big difference.

Sustainable College’s Guild

The Guild is a group of students and staff which come together to share information and make practical changes. The Group is run by Barton Ashton, Lady Margaret Hall.
