Building Numbers and Space References

The Information Management Team (IMT) allocates building numbers to properties in the University's functional estate, and space references to individual spaces within these properties, on behalf of the University. This allows Estates Services (and others) to maintain all property, space and asset records against a set of standard and unique references. The IMT maintains a database of building numbers, names and addresses. For each building the IMT also keeps records of every floor and space using a consistent numbering methodology.

Building Numbers

IMT allocates building numbers according to the building numbering procedure. For all new buildings coming into the functional estate a request to issue a number should be made to the IMT. No one else should attempt to introduce new numbers, nor should numbers be re-used. Sites and subsites are also given a unique reference, as records are also linked to these groups of properties where they are not building specific.

If you need to know a building number for a property please use the link in the right-hand menu or contact the IMT.

Building Names

Names of buildings in the functional estate are assigned with the approval of Building and Estates Sub Committee (BESC). If a department or body wishes to assign a name to a building they should contact the IMT in the first instance. There are some broad  guidelines for naming buildings.

Floor and Space References

Floors and spaces in the functional estate are numbered according to the University's Space Numbering Procedure. The number is in three parts consisting of the building number, floor reference and a code for the space.

All spaces must have an Estates Services reference, irrespective of any numbers assigned by project teams or building occupiers. These are expected to appear on any room signage. The IMT are pleased to assist in the checking or allocation of space references.

Authorised staff can check space references using the links in the right-hand menu.
