Old Road Campus

The Old Road Campus site was acquired by the University from the NHS in 1996. It had previously been the location of the former Oxford Regional Health Authority. A number of buildings remained occupied by NHS organisations and in the remainder the new University Institute of Health Sciences was established.

In 1999 the University built its first building on the site, The Henry Wellcome Building of Human Genetics. This was the first of a number of new larger scale laboratory buildings that have seen the site develop as a location for University medical research. The location of the site adjacent or close to the City's main hospitals has seen the strengthening of links between cutting edge research and clinical treatment.

Over the last 10 years the site has developed with further laboratory and office buildings housing new departments, and some formerly located on the Radcliffe Infirmary site. Such buildings include:

  • Richard Doll Building (cancer epidemiology and clinical trials support unit)
  • Old Road Campus Research Building (cancer, bio-medical engineering)
  • Henry Wellcome Building of Particle Imaging (specialist microscopy)
  • Henry Wellcome Building for Cellular and Molecular Physiology
  • Link Building (additional office and support facilities)

The site also houses the University's Department of Public Health and Primary Care, and the Centre for Post-graduate Dental and Medical Education.

The University is seeking to complete the redevelopment of the site by replacing the original buildings on the site, which are a mixture of time-expired structures, modular and temporary buildings. Negotiations are well advanced for the University to purchase the Park Hospital site and the University is looking to complete a master-planning exercise that will see the two sites developed in a manner that appropriately links the two sites together, and draws on the open and wooded character of the Park site.

Some infrastructure improvements have been undertaken in the last five years in anticipation of future developments. The master-planning exercise will look at both the infrastructure and spatial planning aspects of the Old Road site as well as the combined Old Road and Park Hospital sites.

As with other master-planning exercises it is intended to form a project board to oversee the master-planning exercise and a guardians group to monitor future developments against the emerging masterplan.
