Special Regulations for the Preliminary Examination in Physics and Philosophy

  1. 1. The subjects of the examination, the syllabus, and the number of papers shall be as prescribed by regulation from time to time by the Board of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board.

    1. (1) The Moderators for Physics shall be such of the Moderators in the Preliminary Examination in Physics as may be required; those for Philosophy shall be nominated by a committee of which three elected members shall be appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Philosophy.
    2. (2) It shall be the duty of the Chairman of the Moderators in the Preliminary Examination in Physics to designate such of their number as shall be required in the Preliminary Examination in Physics and Philosophy, and when this has been done and the Moderators for Philosophy have been nominated, the number of Moderators for the Preliminary Examination in Physics and Philosophy shall be deemed to be complete.

  1. 1. For candidates who have previously been examined in Moderations in Physics and Philosophy, only those who failed in the Physics and Mathematics subject of the examination are required to take papers in that subject (1-3 in the Schedule below) which correspond to the papers they have failed in Moderations. Only those candidates who fail in the Philosophy subject in Moderations shall take paper 4 below.
  2. 2. Candidates who have not previously been examined in Moderations in Physics and Philosophy shall take papers 1-4.
  3. 3. Except for papers for which their use is forbidden, the Moderators will permit the use of any hand-held calculator subject to the conditions set out under the heading ‘Use of calculators in examinations’ in the Regulations for the Conduct of University Examinations and further elaborated in the Physics Course Handbook.

Schedule

  1. 1-3. Three papers in Physics and Mathematics, which shall be the three papers referred to in section (a) Physics and Mathematics of the Regulations for Moderations in Physics and Philosophy.
  2. 4. Philosophy. As specified in both papers (b) (1) and (b) (2) for Moderations in Physics and Philosophy. Candidates will be required to answer two questions on the Elements of Deductive Logic, one question on General Philosophy, and one question on the Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence.
