SPECIAL REGULATIONS FOR THE HONOUR SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, ECONOMICS, AND MANAGEMENT

For candidates embarking on the Honour School in or before October 2008, taking paper M1 in or before 2009, taking Part I in or before 2010, and taking Part II in or before 2011

A

1. No candidate shall be admitted to the examination in this school unless he or she has either passed or been exempted from the First Public Examination.
2. The examination in this school shall be under the joint supervision of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board and the Social Sciences Board, which shall appoint a standing joint committee to make regulations concerning it, subject always to the preceding clauses of this sub-section.
3. The examination shall consist of two parts. In both parts candidates shall be examined in the subject prescribed by the committee set up in accordance with the provisions of cl. 2 above. In Part II candidates shall also present, as part of the examination, a report on a project carried out during a period of attachment to an industrial firm or an industrially-related internal university project.
4. No candidate may present himself or herself for examination in Part II unless previously adjudged worthy of Honours by the examiners in Part I. The name of a candidate shall not be published in a Class List unless he or she has been adjudged worthy of Honours by the examiners in Part I and in Part II of the examination in consecutive years, save where approval has been given by the committee for an intercalated year of study or industrial attachment between Parts I and II.
5. A candidate adjudged worthy of Honours in Part I and Part II may supplicate for the Degree of Master of Engineering in Engineering, Economics, and Management provided that the candidate has fulfilled all the conditions for admission to a degree of the University.
6. A candidate who passes Part I or who is adjudged worthy of Honours in Part I, but who does not enter Part II, or fails to obtain Honours in Part II, is permitted to supplicate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Engineering, Economics, and Management (pass or unclassified Honours, as appropriate); provided that no such candidate may later enter or re-enter the Part II year or supplicate for the degree of Master of Engineering in Engineering, Economics, and Management; and provided in each case that the candidate has fulfilled all the conditions for admission to a degree of the University.
7. The examiners for Engineering Science shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Engineering Science; those for Economics shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Economics in the Honour School of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics; those for Management shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Management Studies.

B

The following is a list of the papers which may be offered. Papers A1-A5, A8 and those in Groups B and C are identical with those coded in the same way and specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science. In addition candidates will sit shortened versions of the Honour School of Engineering Science papers A6 and A7. The results of the two papers (A6E and A7E) in combination will be treated by the examiners as the equivalent of one paper. Papers in Group Ec are those which will be set in Economics, and those in Group M are those which will be set in Management.

Candidates will take Paper M1 three terms after passing the first Public Examination. All other written papers will be taken six terms after passing the first Public Examination.

Group C

The list of subjects and the syllabuses from which the papers in Group C may be selected shall be approved by the Faculty of Engineering Science and published in the Gazette by the Chairman of the Standing Committee for EEM and Related Schools not later than the end of the Trinity Full Term of the academic year preceding the year of the examination of Part II. The Chairman also will specify the examination requirements for each C paper.

Economics

Group Ec

Ec1 Introductory Economics (as specified in the regulation relating to the Introductory Economics paper of the Economics and Management Preliminary Examination).

Optional papers

The list from which papers in Group Ec may be selected, and the syllabus of each, shall be approved by the Sub-Faculty of Economics and published in the Gazette by the Chairman of the Standing Committee not later than the end of the Trinity Full Term of the academic year preceding the year of the examination of Part II.

Management

Group M

M1 Introduction to Management (as specified in the regulation relating to the Introduction to Management paper of the Economics and Management Preliminary Examination)

Candidates may be charged for the provision of study packs.

Optional papers

The list from which papers in Group M may be selected, and the syllabus of each, shall be approved by the Faculty of Management Studies and published in the Gazette by the Chairman of the Standing Committee not later than the end of the Trinity Full Term of the academic year preceding the year of the examination of Part II.

Part I

1. Written papers Candidates will be required to take eight papers, consisting of five papers A1-A5 in Group A, any one from Group B, together with paper Ec1 and paper M1. For all written papers candidates are restricted to the use of one hand-held pocket calculator as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science.
2. Coursework In the assessment of paper A6E the examiners shall take into consideration performance in the coursework module and failure by a candidate to complete the coursework to the level prescribed from time to time by the Faculty of Engineering Science. The chairman of that Faculty shall provide a list, by the end of the sixth week of Trinity Term of the year in which the Part I examination is taken, showing the extent to which each candidate has satisfied the requirements. Candidates will not normally be required to submit their Engineering Practical Work. However, the examiners may request practical work from some candidates. Such candidates will be named in a list posted by the day of the last written examination. For paper A7E candidates shall be required to submit an assignment on an assessment of safety, environment or sustainability as specified in a list published by the Chairman of the Faculty of Engineering Science not later than Friday of the eighth week of Hilary Full Term in the academic year preceding that in which the written examination is to be taken. Written work shall be typed and the assignmentshall have not more than 3,000 words, except where specified in the published list. The assignment shall be submitted to the Chairman of Examiners, Honour School of Engineering, Economics and Management, c/o Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, not later than noon on Friday of the ninth week of the Trinity Term of the year preceding the written examination. The material must be the candidate's own work and the candidate shall sign and present with the portfolio a detachable certificate to this effect. An assignment previously submitted for the Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management may be resubmitted. No assignment will be accepted if it has already been submitted wholly or substantially for another honour school or degree of this University, or for a degree at any other institution. Resubmitted work must be physically presented at the time and in the manner prescribed for submission. Candidates shall submit to the examiners reports on the Part I Design Project (A8) completed as part of their course of study. The subject of the project shall be approved by the Projects Committee of the Faculty of Engineering Science and two copies of the report shall be submitted to the Chairman of Examiners, Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management, c/o Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, by noon on Friday of the fourth week of Trinity Term in the year of the Part I examination. The examiners shall consider the project report as the equivalent of a written paper. The project report must not exceed 30 pages (including all diagrams, photographs, references and appendices); all pages should be numbered, have margins of not less than 20mm all round, and type face not less than 11 font with line spacing of no less than 8mm. The report must be the candidate's own work and should include a signed statement to this effect. Project reports previously submitted for the Honour School of Engineering, Economics and Management may be resubmitted. No project report will be accepted if it has already been submitted wholly or substantially for another honour school or degree of this University, or for a degree at any other institution. Resubmitted work must be physically presented at the time and in the manner prescribed for submission.
3. Viva Voce Each candidate may be examined viva voce.

Part II

1. Written papers Candidates shall be required to take three papers as follows: The equivalent of one paper from Group C. Any two papers from the list of optional Ec and M papers published annually. For all written papers, candidates are restricted to the use of one hand-held pocket calculator as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science.
2. Industrial placements and projects Candidates will be required to undertake either a twenty-four week project attached to an industrial firm, or a twenty-four week internal university project. The former will be undertaken between the end of Trinity Full Term in the year in which the Part I examination is held and the beginning of Hilary Full Term in the year in which the Part II examination is held. The latter will run from the beginning of Michaelmas Term to the beginning of Trinity Term in the year in which the Part II examination is held. Candidates will be required to present, as part of the Part II examination, a report on the project carried out during this period. In the case of a management report, the report shall not exceed 20,000 words including appendices and tables, but excluding references. For an engineering project, the report must not exceed 50 pages (including all diagrams, photographs, references and appendices); all pages must be numbered, have margins of not less than 20mm all round and type face of Arial 11 pt font with double-line spacing. The project report shall be considered by the examiners in deciding the class of a candidate as equivalent to three written papers. The project will be carried out under the supervision of a person or persons approved by the Project Co-ordinator in Engineering or Management as appropriate. The industrial attachment and project will normally be arranged by, and must be approved by, the project co-ordinators in Management and/or Engineering. The report shall be on a topic, approved by the standing committee, normally in Management or Engineering. Topics in Economics may be approved, but the project co-ordinators cannot undertake to arrange projects in the field of Economics. Candidates undertaking a management project will be required to keep statutory residence for workshops, as specified by the Course Director, in the year in which the Part I examination is taken in order to prepare for the project to be carried out as part of the Part II examination.
3. Submission of project reports External project reports must be submitted by noon on Friday of the week before the start of Hilary Full Term in the year following the year in which the Part I examination is held. Internal projects must be submitted by noon on Friday of the fourth week of Trinity Term of that year. They must be addressed to ‘The Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford OX1 4BG, for the Chairman of Examiners in Part II of the examination for the Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management’. Reports must be accompanied by a signed statement by the candidate that it is his or her own work. Candidates must submit two copies of each project report. Successful candidates will be required to deposit one of these copies in the library of the Department of Engineering Science and the other in the library of the School of Management.
4. Viva Voce Candidates may be examined viva voce on any part of their course of study, including their industrial project.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS FOR THE HONOUR SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, ECONOMICS, AND MANAGEMENT

For candidates embarking on the Honour School in or after October 2009, taking Part A in or after 2010, taking Part B in or after 2011, and taking Part C in or after 2012.

A

1. No candidate shall be admitted to examination in this school unless he or she has either passed or been exempted from the First Public Examination.
2. The examination in this school shall be under the joint supervision of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board and the Social Sciences Board, which shall appoint a standing joint committee to make regulations concerning it, subject always to the preceding clauses of this subsection.
3. (a) The examination shall consist of three parts: A, B and C. (b) Parts A, B and C shall be taken at times not less than three, six and nine terms, respectively, after passing or being exempted from the First Public Examination. (c) Parts B and C shall be taken in consecutive years, save where approval has been given by the committee for an intercalated year of study or industrial attachment between Parts B and C.
4. No candidate may present him or herself for examination in Part C unless he or she has been adjudged worthy of Honours by the examiners in both Parts A and B together.
5. The name of a candidate shall not be published in a class list until he or she has completed all parts of the examination, and has been adjudged worthy of Honours by the examiners in Parts A, B and C of the examination. The Examiners shall give due consideration to the performance in all parts of the respective examinations.
6. The examiners shall be entitled to award a Pass to candidates on Parts A and B who have reached a standard considered adequate but who have not been adjudged worthy of Honours.
7. A candidate who obtains only a pass, or fails to satisfy the examiners, may enter again for Part B of the examination on one, but no more than one, subsequent occasion. Parts A and C shall be entered on one occasion only.
8. A candidate adjudged worthy of Honours on both Parts A and B together, and on Part C may supplicate for the Degree of Master of Engineering in Engineering, Economics, and Management, provided he or she has fulfilled all the conditions for admission to a degree of the University.
9. A candidate who passes both Parts A and B or who is adjudged worthy of Honours in Parts A and B together, but who does not enter Part C, or fails to obtain classified Honours in Part C, may be permitted to supplicate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Engineering, Economics, and Management (pass or unclassified Honours, as appropriate); provided that no such candidate may later enter or re-enter the Part C year or supplicate for the degree of Master of Engineering in Engineering, Economics, and Management; and provided in each case that the candidate has fulfilled all the conditions for admission to a degree of the University.
10. The examiners for Engineering Science shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Engineering Science; those for Economics shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Economics in the Honour School of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics; those for Management shall be appointed by the committee for the nomination of examiners in Management Studies.

B

In the following ‘the Course Handbook’ refers to the Engineering, Economics, and Management Undergraduate Course Handbook, published annually at the start of Michaelmas Term by the committee.

The syllabus for each of Parts A, B and C will be published by the committee in the Course Handbook, together with the relative weighting of each paper and the duration of all written papers.

The examiners will not provide calculators, but will permit the use of one hand-held pocket calculator as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science.

1. In Part A of the examination, candidates will be required to take four written papers: Paper A1 Mathematics (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper M1 General Management (as specified in the regulation relating to the General Management paper of the Economics and Management Preliminary Examination). Two papers from: Paper A2 Electronic and Information Engineering (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper A3 Structures, Materials and Dynamics (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper A4 Energy Systems (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) In addition, they will be required to take Paper A5E Engineering Practical Work (a shortened version of the Honour School of Engineering Science Paper A5), which will be examined by continuous assessment of practical work. Candidates will not normally be required to submit their Engineering Practical Work. However, the examiners may request practical work from some candidates. Such candidates will be named in a list posted by the day of the last written examination.
2. In Part B of the examination, candidates will be required to take: Three optional Engineering written papers from Schedule B of the Honour School of Engineering Science. Paper B2 Engineering in Society (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper Ec1 Introductory Economics (as specified in the regulation relating to the Introductory Economics paper of the Economics and Management Preliminary Examination). Candidates will also be required to take three Engineering coursework subjects: Paper B1 Engineering Computation (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper B3 Group Design Project (as specified in the Honour School of Engineering Science) Paper B4E Engineering Practical Work (a shortened version of the Honour School of Engineering Science Paper B4) Paper B4E will be examined by continuous assessment. Candidates will not normally be required to submit their Engineering Practical Work. However, the examiners may request practical work from some candidates. Such candidates will be named in a list posted by the day of the last written examination.
3. Candidates shall submit to the examiners reports on the Group Design Project (Paper B3) completed as a part of their course of study. The subject of the project shall be approved by the Projects Committee of the Faculty of Engineering Science and three copies of the report shall be submitted to the Chairman of the Examiners, Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management, c/o Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, by noon on Friday of the fourth week of Trinity Term in the year of the Part B examination. The project report must not exceed thirty pages (including all diagrams, photographs, references and appendices); all pages must be numbered, have margins of not less than 20mm all round and type face of Arial 11 pt font with double-line spacing. The report must be the candidate’s own work and should include a signed statement to this effect. Project reports previously submitted for the Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management may be resubmitted. No project report will be accepted if it has already been submitted wholly or substantially for another honour school or degree of this University, or for a degree at any other institution. Resubmitted work must be physically presented at the time and in the manner prescribed for submission.
4. In Part C a candidate shall be required to offer: Two written Engineering papers from Schedule C in the Course Handbook. Two papers from the list of optional Management and Economics papers published annually.
5. Candidates will also be required to undertake either a twenty-four week external project attached to an industrial firm, or a twenty-four week internal university project. The former will be undertaken between the end of Trinity Full Term in the year in which the Part B examination is held and the beginning of Hilary Full Term in the year in which the Part C examination is held. They must be addressed to ‘The Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford OX1 4BG, for the Chairman of Examiners in Part C of the examination for the Honour School of Engineering, Economics, and Management’.
