[1] Advanced Cognitive Therapy Studies (old regulations for students registered on the PG Diploma ACTS before 1 October 2012)
- [2] 1. The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and classes on the principle and practice of advanced cognitive therapy studies, together with clinical practice and practice in supervision of cognitive therapy trainees. The course will be taken on a part-time basis over a period of not fewer than three terms.

[3] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [4] (a) attendance at the appropriate classroom-based courses including small group supervision of supervision practice;
- [5] (b) attendance at two independent advanced level clinical therapy training workshops;
- [6] (c) skill in treating simple and complex cases with cognitive therapy;
- [7] (d) skill in supervising cognitive therapy trainees, as demonstrated in a video-recording of a supervision session delivered by the candidate, together with written reflection and critical review, and supervisee feedback;
- [8] (e) one written research proposal (1,500 words);
- [9] (f) one extended written case study of a complex case (no more than 6,000 words);
- [10] (g) two written assignments, each of no more than 4,000 words, one covering the design, delivery and evaluation of a training event, and one describing and evaluating the development of a service initiative;
- [11] (h) a presentation of a brief interactive cognitive therapy training event.
- [12] The presentations under (d) and (h), the assessed work under (e), (f) and (g), shall be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify the candidates and tutors.
- [13] 3. Candidates may be expected to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [14] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [15] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the presentations under 2(d) and (h), or the assessed work under (e), (f) and (g), may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed for examination on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
[16] Advanced Cognitive Therapy Studies (new regulations for students registering on the award from 1 October 2012 and available to existing students)
- [17] 1. The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and classes on the principles and practice of advanced cognitive therapy studies, together with clinical supervision and practice in the supervision and training of cognitive therapists. The course will be taken on a part-time basis.
- [18] 2. The policy of the Continuing Education Board on variable intensity part-time postgraduate study applies to this award.
- [19] 3. The minimum period of registration for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma shall be three terms and the maximum period shall be nine terms.
- [20] 4. Candidates may be permitted by the Continuing Education Board in certain circumstances to intermit for a maximum of six terms. Any such period shall not count to the maximum or minimum permitted period of registration and no fee liability will be incurred during such periods.
- [21] 5. Where a candidate undertakes a module for credit under Cl 10 below the date of registration for the award shall retrospectively be deemed to be first day of the term in which the module was taken.

[22] 6. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [23] (a) attendance at the modules listed below;
- [24] (b) attendance at two independent advanced level clinical therapy training workshops;
- [25] (c) one video of a supervision session together with a reflective commentary and a written critique of no more than 2,000 words in respect of Module 1;
- [26] (d) one written report of no more than 4,000 words covering the design, delivery and evaluation of a CBT training event in respect of Module 2;
- [27] (e) one recorded clinical session of a ‘complex case’ together with a written case study of no more than 4,000 words of that patient in respect of Module 3;
- [28] (f) one written research proposal of no more than 1,500 words in respect of Module 4;
- [29] (g) one written assignment of no more than 4,000 words describing and evaluating the development of a service initiative in respect of Module 5.
- [30] The assessed work under (c), (d), (e), (f) and (g), shall be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify the candidates and tutors.
- [31] 7. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [32] 8. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [33] 9. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the assignments under 6 (c) to (g) above may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts they have failed on not more than one occasion for each assignment without being required to repeat attendance at the relevant module or modules. The resubmission shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
- [34] 10. Provided the Programme Committee is satisfied that a student on the award has undertaken equivalent study, of an appropriate standard, normally at another institution of higher education, or has appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard, the Committee shall have the discretion to permit the candidate to be exempted from attendance and the submission of a written assignment in respect of up to two modules. In exercising this discretion the Programme Committee shall have consideration to the length of time that has elapsed since the study or work experience was undertaken.
- [35] 11. The Programme Committee shall have the discretion to deem satisfactory completion of a module including the associated assessment prior to registration for the award as having met the attendance and examination requirements in respect of that module. Such discretion will normally only be exercised if the time elapsed between commencement of the accredited module concerned and registration for the award is not more than two years. The maximum number of modules taken prior to registration for the award that can contribute to the achievement of the award of the Postgraduate Diploma shall be two.

[38] Module 2. Training skills, in the context of adult learning theory
[39] Module 3. Updates in clinical theory, research and practice in Anxiety Disorders and Depressive Disorders
[40] Module 4. Research methodology and skills for the practicing clinician
[41] Module 5. Organisational development, particularly as it relates to establishing, maintaining and developing cognitive therapy service
[42] Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- [43] 1. The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and classes on the principle and practice of cognitive behavioural therapy, together with clinical practice in cognitive behavioural therapy. The course will be taken on a part-time basis over a period of not less than three terms and no more than nine terms.

[44] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [45] (a) attendance at the appropriate classroom-based courses including small group case supervisions;
- [46] (b) supervised treatment of at least five patients by cognitive behavioural therapy;
- [47] (c) six audio- or videotape presentations of behavioural therapy sessions;
- [48] (d) three written case presentations, each of no more than 4,000 words;
- [49] (e) a dissertation of no more than 10,000 words on a topic approved by the examiners.
- [50] The six audio- or videotape presentations under (c), the three case presentations under (d), and the dissertation under (e) shall be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates and tutors.
- [51] 3. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of study at the discretion of the examiners.
- [52] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Diploma.
- [53] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the audio- or videotape presentations under 2(c), the three case presentations under 2(d), or the dissertation under 2(e) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed for examination on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
[54] Diplomatic Studies
- [55] 1. Students for the Diploma may hold that status for no more than six terms.
- [56] 2. Candidates are only eligible to be admitted to the Diploma in Diplomatic Studies if they have achieved a satisfactory standard in the first term of study for the Certificate in Diplomatic Studies. Admission to the Diploma will take place at the end of the first term in the year of study, on the basis of a transfer proposal and the first term’s assessed written work, as approved by the Admissions Committee for the programme.

[57] 3. Each student will follow a course of study comprising four core courses. The four core courses are:
- [58] International Politics. Key concepts in international relations leading to central issues in world politics, with particular emphasis on change in the international system and the evolving role of diplomacy in consequence.
- [59] Economics. Basics of international trade theory and macroeconomics, focusing on such applied and political economy topics as trade liberalisation, globalisation, and international resource transfers.
- [60] International Law. Principles of international law and the processes of legal reasoning, and their application to current world problems ranging from the nature of international law to the use of force and conflict settlement.
- [61] Diplomatic Practice. Overview of different regions of the world, major international organisations, and current world problems as they affect diplomats. Review of practical aspects of diplomacy and their application to discussion of practical action by means of which governments can address these problems.
- [62] In addition, candidates will be required to submit a dissertation of between 10,000 and 12,000 words.
- [63] 4. Examinations. Candidates will be required to take papers in International Politics, International Law, Economics, and Diplomatic Practice.

[64] 5. Syllabus
- [65] I. Four core modules: International Politics, Economics, International Law, and Diplomatic Practice.
- [66] II. Each candidate will be required to present a dissertation of not more than 12,000 words, on a subject approved by the examiners, to the examiners c/o the Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, by 12 noon on Friday of sixth week of Trinity Term in the year in which he or she completes the course. All material submitted for the dissertation shall be accompanied by a certificate signed by the candidate indicating that it is the candidate’s own work.
- [67] 6. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Diploma. To be awarded a distinction, a candidate must obtain either an average of 70 overall in the five programme elements; or a mark of 70 or above in three of the five programme elements, of which one shall normally be the dissertation.
- [68] 7. A candidate for the Diploma who fails to meet the standard required for award of the Diploma, but who has met the examination standards and requirements stipulated in the regulations governing the Certificate in Diplomatic Studies, may be offered the option of resitting the examination for the Diploma, or (having satisfied the examination standards and requirements of that qualification) of being awarded the Certificate.
- [69] 8. A candidate whose overall average mark falls below 50 shall be eligible to resit the failed elements on one occasion during the following academic year. Compensation in one paper is allowed.
- [70] 9. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the written examinations in all four of the core elements of the Certificate course, or who fail to submit a dissertation of the necessary standard will be eligible to resit on one occasion.
[71] Evidence-Based Health Care
- [72] 1. The Divisional Board of Medical Sciences, jointly with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee, which shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [73] 2. Candidates must follow for at least three and at most nine terms a part-time course of instruction in the theory and practice of Evidence-Based Health Care, which shall normally take place over a period of no more than four years. The postgraduate diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of M.Sc. in Evidence-Based Health Care.

[74] 3. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [75] (a) attendance at both of the modules listed in Schedule A (below);
- [76] (b) attendance at four of the modules listed in Schedule B (below);
- [77] (c) six written assignments, usually of no more than 5,000 words, one on each of the modules from 3(a) and 3(b) above. [78] The assessed work set out in clause 3(c) shall be forwarded to the examiners c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates.
- [79] 4. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [80] 5. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [81] 6. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the six assignments under 3(c) may be permitted, normally within one year of the original failure, to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts they have failed on not more than one occasion for each assignment without being required to repeat attendance at the relevant module or modules under 3(a) and/or 3(b).
- [82] 7. The Standing Committee shall have the discretion to permit any candidate to be exempted, in exceptional circumstances, from attendance at a module under 3(a) or 3(b) and from submitting an assignment required under 3(c) above, provided that the Standing Committee is satisfied that such a candidate has undertaken equivalent study, or has appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard.

[99] Experimental Therapeutics (exit award only) (old regulations for students registered on the MSc Experimental Therapeutics before 1 October 2012)
- [100] 1. The Medical Sciences Board, in consultation with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee that shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [101] 2. Every candidate must follow for at least six terms a part-time course of instruction in the theory and practice of Experimental Therapeutics, which shall normally take place over a period of two years and no more than four years.

[102] 3. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [103] (a) active participation, to the satisfaction of the Programme Director, in each of the modules listed below.
- [104] (b) six written assignments of not more than 5,000 words in length, one from each of the six modules specified. [105] The assessed work set out in cl. 3(b) shall be forwarded to the examiners c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates. The assessed work will, in normal circumstances, be submitted through an electronic submission system.
- [106] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [107] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any part of the examination may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination that they have failed, for examination on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
- [108] 6. The Standing Committee shall have the discretion to permit any candidate to be exempted from submitting an assignment of the total of six written assignments required under 3(b) above, provided that the Standing Committee is satisfied that such a candidate has undertaken equivalent study, or has appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard.

- [119] 2. The Postgraduate Diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of M.Sc. in Experimental Therapeutics. The course is available on a part time basis only and shall consist of instruction in the theory and practice of Experimental Therapeutics.
- [120] 3. The policy of the Continuing Education Board on variable intensity part-time postgraduate study shall apply to this award.
- [121] 4. The minimum period of registration on the PG Diploma shall be three terms and the maximum period of registration shall be twelve terms.
- [122] 5. Candidates may be permitted in certain circumstances to suspend status, for a maximum of six terms. Any such period shall not count to the maximum or minimum permitted period of registration and no fee liability will be incurred during such periods.

[123] 6. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [124] (a) participation, to the satisfaction of the course director, in each of the modules listed below;
- [125] (b) six written assignments of not more than 4,000 words in length, one from each of the six modules specified.
- [126] The assessed work set out in clause 6(b) shall be forwarded to the examiners c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates. The assessed work will, in normal circumstances, be submitted through an electronic submission system.
- [127] 7. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [128] 8. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the PG Diploma.
- [129] 9. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the assignments under 6b above may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts they have failed on not more than one occasion for each assignment without being required to repeat attendance at the relevant module or modules. The resubmission shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
- [130] 10. Provided the Standing Committee is satisfied that a student on the award has undertaken equivalent study, of an appropriate standard, normally at another institution of higher education, or has appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard, the committee may permit the candidate to be exempted from attendance and the submission of a written assignment in respect of up to three modules. In exercising this discretion the Standing Committee shall take into consideration the length of time that has elapsed since the study or work experience was undertaken.
- [131] 11. The Standing Committee may deem satisfactory completion of a module (including the associated assessment) undertaken prior to registration for the award as having met the attendance and examination requirements in respect of that module. Such discretion will normally only be exercised if the time elapsed between commencement of the accredited module concerned and registration for the award is not more than two years. The maximum number of modules taken prior to registration for the award that may be counted in this way shall be three.

[140] Health Research
- [141] 1. The Medical Sciences Board, jointly with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee, which shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [142] 2. Candidates will normally be expected to have satisfactorily completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Research. Applications for dispensation from this requirement will be considered, in exceptional circumstances only, by the Standing Committee. To be dispensed from this requirement, candidates must demonstrate that they have undertaken equivalent study, or have appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard.
- [143] 3. Candidates must follow for at least three and at most six terms, a part-time course of instruction in the theory and practice of Health Research. For candidates who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Research, the number of terms in excess of three taken to complete the study of the Postgraduate Certificate will count towards the maximum number of terms permitted to complete the study of the Postgraduate Diploma. The period of study for the Postgraduate Diploma shall normally be no more than two years, so long as, for candidates who completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Research, the total period of study on the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Health Research shall be no longer than three years from the commencement of the Postgraduate Certificate.

[144] 4. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [145] (a) attendance at three of the modules listed in the Schedule (below);
- [146] (b) three written assignments, usually of no more than 5000 words, one on each of the modules from 4(a) above.
- [147] The assignments set out in clause 4(b) shall be forwarded, usually electronically via a specified online submission system, to the examiners c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates.
- [148] 5. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [149] 6. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [150] 7. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the three assignments under 4(b) may be permitted, normally within one year of the original failure, to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts they have failed on not more than one occasion for each assignment without being required to repeat attendance at the relevant module or modules under 4(a).
- [151] 8. The standing committee shall have the discretion to permit any candidate to be exempted, in exceptional circumstances, from attendance at any module under 4(a) and from submitting the associated assignment required under 4(b) above, provided that the standing committee is satisfied that such a candidate has undertaken equivalent study, or have appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard.

- [163] 1. Candidates must follow a course of instruction in History of Design. The course will be taken on a part-time basis over a period of not fewer than two years and not more than three years within a maximum period of five years. The postgraduate diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of MSt in the History of Design.

[166] Every candidate must submit a written assignment for each of the three core course papers taught in Year 1:

[190] Recanati-Kaplan Centre Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice
- [191] 1. The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board, jointly with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee that shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [192] 2. The diploma shall be entitled the Recanati-Kaplan Centre Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice.
- [193] 3. Candidates must follow for a period of eight months a course of instruction in International Wildlife Conservation Practice.

[194] 4. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [195] (a) the submission of five written assignments of not more than 2,000 words each, one on each of the modules listed in the Schedule below; and
- [196] (b) the attendance on two projects (at least one of which may take the form of a placement) approved by the Standing Committee, and the submission of two reports of not more than 7,000 words each, one on each of the projects. - [210] 1. The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board, jointly with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee which shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [211] 2. Every candidate must follow for at least five and at most eight terms a part-time course of instruction in the theory and practice of Mathematical Finance.
- [212] 3. The subjects of the course will consist of all four modules listed in Section A of the Schedule for the M.Sc. in Mathematical Finance and one module chosen from Section B of the Schedule.

[213] 4. Every candidate must normally:
- [214] (a) attend four modules from Section A of the Schedule and one from Section B. Candidates may, in exceptional circumstances, and with the permission of the Standing Committee, be exempt from attendance at part of module 1;
- [215] (b) submit four assignments, one on each of the modules in Section A of the Schedule. These assignments will be assessed formatively and will not contribute towards the final award;

[216] 5. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [217] (a) two written examinations, covering material relevant to modules 1 to 4 in Section A of the Schedule;
- [218] (b) one assignment chosen from the advanced modules in Section B of the Schedule. The assignment should be of no more than ten sides of A4 in length (excluding tables, appendices, footnotes and bibliography);
- [219] (c) a project report of no more than twenty-five sides of A4 in length (excluding tables, appendices, footnotes and bibliography), on a topic approved by the Standing Committee.
- [220] (d) With the permission of the Standing Committee, a candidate for the Postgraduate Diploma may attend one or two additional advanced modules from Section B of the Schedule and may submit the associated assignment(s), to be counted towards the requirements for the M.Sc. in Mathematical Finance if the candidate is later accepted onto the M.Sc., subject to the provisions of the regulations for the M.Sc.
- [221] The assignments under clauses (b) and (d) and the project report under (c) above shall be submitted electronically, in accordance with details given in the handbook for the Postgraduate Diploma, by such date as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates. In exceptional cases where a candidate is unable to submit work electronically, he or she must apply to the Standing Committee for permission to submit the work in paper form to the Examiners c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA. Such applications must reach the Registry two weeks before the deadline for submitting the work.
- [222] 6. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [223] 7. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Diploma.
- [224] 8. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the written examinations under 5(a), the assignment under 5(b), or the project report under 5(c) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed. In the case of the written examinations, this shall normally be on the occasion of the written examinations next following; in the case of assignments or the project report, the work shall normally be resubmitted within one year of the decision of the examiners.
[225] Paediatric Infectious Diseases
- [226] 1. The course will consist of lectures, written assignments and online interactive case studies in the field of paediatric infectious disease. The course may be taken on a part-time basis over a period which shall normally be of two years’ duration but shall not exceed three years’ duration.

[227] 2. Every candidate must normally:
- [228] (a) Attend a residential course held annually in Oxford entitled 'Infection and Immunity in Children'.
- [229] (b) Attend a second residential course held annually in Oxford entitled 'Infection and Immunity in Children' (with a different course syllabus each year).
- [230] (c) Attend the residential PENTA-ESPID (Tr@inforPedHIV) training course in paediatric HIV medicine.
- [231] (d) Complete Online PENTA-ESPID (Tr@inforPedHIV) module in paediatric HIV medicine.
- [232] (e) Actively participate in seven ESPID Online Case Rounds.
- [233] (f) Actively participate in one four week PENTA-ESPID (Tr@inforPedHIV) Online Case Discussion in paediatric HIV medicine.
- [234] (g) Actively participate in six online multiple choice sessions.

[235] 3. Every candidate shall be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [236] (a) Active participation, to the satisfaction of the Course Director, in all parts of the course.

[237] (b) A written assignment consisting of either:
- [238] i. An audit of clinical practice in paediatric infectious disease of no more than 4000 words.

- [244] i. A dissertation in an area of special interest of no more than 8000 words.

- [246] ii. A project report describing a research study in the field of paediatric infectious diseases undertaken by the candidate of no more than 8000 words written in the style of a scientific paper with abstract, introduction/background, methods, results and conclusion.
- [247] (d) An examination consisting of multiple choice questions in paediatric infectious diseases covering the topics outlined in the schedule for training in paediatric infectious disease summarised below.
- [248] The assignments under 3(b) and 3(c) shall be forwarded to the examiners c/o Registry, Department of Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA, for consideration by such date as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates. The assessed work will, in normal circumstances, be submitted through an electronic submission system.
- [249] 4. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies at the discretion of the examiners.
- [250] 5. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma.
- [251] 6. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the assignments under 3(b) and 3(c) or the examination under 3(d) above may normally be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the original failure.
[252] Professional Archaeology
- [253] 1. Every candidate must follow for three terms (full-time) or six terms (part-time) a course of instruction in Professional Archaeology.
- [254] 2. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, individual tutorials and, in the case of full-time students, three approved ten week placements, or in the case of part-time students, approved work-place projects undertaken.

[255] 3. The examination will consist of the following parts:

[256] (a) a portfolio which shall include:
- [257] (i) a written report of 5,000 words maximum of the work undertaken at the first placement;
- [258] (ii) a written report of 5,000 words maximum of the work undertaken at the second placement;
- [259] (iii) a written report of 5,000 words maximum of the work undertaken at the third placement; [260] (In the case of part-time students, a written report of 15,000 words maximum on work-place projects undertaken with an approved relevant organisation). The portfolio material for each placement must represent ten weeks of professionally competent work;
- [261] (iv) three written assignments of 2,000-2,500 words each, one during each of the placements on an agreed topic;
- [262] (v) five written reports of 1,000 words maximum each, one on each of the following courses: four optional short courses and a survey week.
- [263] The portfolio shall be forwarded to the examiners, c/o Registry, Department for Continuing Education, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA for consideration by such a date as the examiners shall determine and shall notify the candidates and tutors at the start of each academic year.
- [264] (b) a viva voce examination.

[268] 1. Course
- [269] (a) The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, classes, and supervised practice on the theory and practice of Psychodynamic Practice. Candidates will be required to undertake personal therapy. The course will be taken on a part-time basis over a period which shall be of two years' duration.
- [270] (b) The course places equal emphasis on theory, practice, and the candidate's personal and professional development. In the first year candidates will study the Historical and Theoretical Perspective, the Psychiatric Perspective, the Contemporary Perspective, and the Developmental Perspective, and be introduced to core clinical models. The organisational perspective will be taught to complement candidates' clinical placements. Candidates will study long term counselling and psychotherapy. The second year will include the study of time limited counselling and psychotherapy and the application of the core theoretical model to varied contexts and clinical populations.

[271] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [272] (a) attendance at weekly classes, sensitivity group sessions, individual tutorials, a weekend school, and review sessions and revision days;

[273] (b) five written assignments as follows:
- [274] (i) an initial case study of no more than 3,000 words.
- [275] (ii) a second case study, of no more than 3,000 words.
- [276] (iii) an extract from a candidate’s placement log of no more than 3,000 words.
- [277] (iv) an extract from the candidate’s Reflective Journal, of no more than 3,000 words.
- [278] (v) an essay, of no more than 3,000 words, based on theoretical material covered in the course.
- [279] (c) a dissertation of no more than 10,000 words (including appendices and footnotes but excluding bibliography). The subject of the dissertation must be submitted for approval by the external examiner following consultation with the course director by noon of Friday of fourth week of Hilary Full Term in the second year of the course.
- [280] (d) participation in a minimum of 17 placement supervisions to include at least 100 hours of client/patient contact;
- [281] (e) participation in a minimum of 80 hours of personal therapy and submission of a statement of hours completed from the candidate’s personal therapist;
- [282] (f) submission of annual reports from the candidate's course tutor and clinical seminar leader;
- [283] (g) confirmation from the sensitivity group conductor that there are no ethical reasons why the candidate should be discouraged from commencing professional work.
- [285] 3. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of studies.
- [286] 4. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the assignments in 2(b) or the dissertation may be permitted to resubmit work in the part or parts of the examination which they have failed for examination on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the original failure. Approval for deferral must be obtained from the relevant board of studies. Candidates who fail to obtain a satisfactory report of their placement at the end of the first year will be given additional support. Candidates who fail to obtain a satisfactory report at the end of the second year may be permitted by the examiners to continue in the placement until the required standard is reached, for a period of no more than one year after the end of the second year.
- [287] 5. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the diploma.
[288] Surgical Science and Practice (exit award only) (old regulations for students registered on the MSc Surgical Science and Practice before 1 October 2012)
- [289] 1. The Divisional Board of Medical Sciences, jointly with the Continuing Education Board, shall elect for the supervision of the course a Standing Committee, which shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
- [290] 2. Candidates must follow for at least three terms and at most nine terms, a part-time course of instruction in the theory and practice of Surgical Science and Practice, which shall normally take place over a period of no more than four years. The Postgraduate Diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of MSc in Surgical Science and Practice.

- [312] 2. The Postgraduate Diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of M.Sc. in Surgical Science and Practice. The course is available on a part time basis only and shall consist of instruction in the theory and practice of Surgical Science and Practice.
- [313] 3. The policy of the Continuing Education Board on variable intensity part time study shall apply to this award.
- [314] 4. The minimum period of registration on the Postgraduate Diploma shall be three terms and the maximum period of registration shall be twelve terms.

Provided the Standing Committee is satisfied that a student on the award has undertaken equivalent study, of an appropriate standard, normally at another institution of higher education, or has appropriate work experience to an equivalent standard, the committee may permit the candidate to be exempted from attendance and the submission of a written assignment in respect of up to three modules. In exercising this discretion the Standing Committee shall take into consideration the length of time that has elapsed since the study or work experience was undertaken.
- [325] 10. The Standing Committee may deem satisfactory completion of a module (including the associated assessment) prior to registration for the award as having met the attendance and examination requirements in respect of that module. Such discretion will normally only be exercised if the time elapsed between commencement of the accredited module concerned and registration for the award is not more than two years. The maximum number of modules taken prior to registration for the award that may count in this way shall be three.

The Postgraduate Diploma is only available to students admitted for the degree of MSc in Sustainable Urban Development.
