[1] Archaeology

[2] 1. Course
- [3] (a) The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars and classes on the subject of Archaeology. The course, which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of a minimum of two, and no more than three years.
- [4] (b) The subjects of the course will be taught in two one-year modules. One module shall be offered each year. Candidates must complete the introductory module Discovering Archaeology: its purpose and practice (Module A) before proceeding to Module B. To qualify for the award of the Certificate, candidates must satisfy the examiners in modules A and B.

[5] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [6] (a) Attendance at a minimum of 75% of class-based sessions;
- [7] (b) Attendance at one week of fieldwork (and associated written work) and study visits to the satisfaction of the Course Director;
- [8] (c) Attendance at a minimum of two one-hour tutorials in the second year of the course;
- [9] (d) Three practical assignments, of which two shall be between 1,000 and 1,500 words in length, and one shall be between 2,000 and 2,500 words, based on the practical work undertaken in Module A;
- [10] (e) Three written assignments of normally between 1,400 and 1,600 words in length, based on the subjects taught in Module A;
- [11] (f) Three practical assignments, each of which shall be between 1,000 and 1,500 words in length, based on the practical work undertaken in Module B;
- [12] (g) Three written assignments of normally between 1,800 and 2,000 words in length, based on the subjects taught in Module B;
- [13] (h) One written assignment totalling no more than 1,000 words in length, and a field notebook, covering work done in the fieldwork week;
- [14] (i) One two-hour written examination, covering the subjects taught in Module A;
- [15] (j) One extended project of between 4,500 and 5,500 words in length consisting of a subject of the candidate's choice relating to the course material in Module B and agreed with the Course Director.
- [17] 3. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course.
- [18] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [19] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the assessed work specified in clauses (b), (d) to (j) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
[20] Archaeology: Themes and Methods (for students admitted from October 2011)
- [21] 1. The course shall consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars and classes on the subject of Archaeology. The course, which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of a minimum of one, and no more than two, years.

[22] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [23] (a) attendance at class-based sessions;
- [24] (b) attendance at study visits;
- [25] (c) attendance at two seminars;
- [26] (d) participation in on-line study forums;
- [27] (e) three written assignments each of no more than 1,500 words in length based on methods in Archaeology. The first of these is formative only and marks do not contribute to the final award;
- [28] (f) two written assignments each of no more than 2,000 words in length based on the periods covered;
- [29] (g) a Practical Logbook of up to 5,000 words in length offering a choice of tasks to include reports of fieldwork, visits and contributions to Discussion Forum.
- [30] The written work under clauses 2(e)-(g) will be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates.
- [31] 3. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [32] 4. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the assessed work specified in clauses 2(e)-(g) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more that one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
[33] Higher Education
- [34] 1. The Certificate shall consist of accredited classes and other courses of study provided by the Department for Continuing Education. The Certificate is available on a part-time basis and may be taken over a period of not fewer than two years and no more than four years.

[35] 2. The main subjects for the Certificate shall be Archaeology, Art History, Architectural History, Creative Writing, History, Italian, Literature, Philosophy, and Spanish, together with such other subjects as may be approved by the Continuing Education Board. Candidates must select one of these as their main subject. A list of classes and other courses available in any one year that can be taken for the Certificate, including those identified as qualifying courses, will be published annually by the Department.
[36] 3. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:

[37] (a) accumulation of 120 Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) points from classes and courses provided by the Department for Continuing Education. These 120 points must include the following:
- [38] (i) 5 points from either three study skills day schools or the online study skills course;
- [39] (ii) 10 points from a course approved as a qualifying course in the candidate's main subject;
- [40] (iii) no fewer than 50, and no more than 70, additional points, in the candidate's main subject;
- [41] (iv) no fewer than 30 points, and no more than 50 points, from eligible classes or courses in other subjects;
- [42] (v) a reflective learning journal of not more than 2,000 words submitted in two parts (5 CATS points).
- [43] (b) Two assignments, each of no more than 2,500 words or equivalent, based on topics relating to two separate classes or courses in the candidate's main subject area.
- [44] (c) One assignment of not more than 3,500 words or equivalent based on a topic relating to a class or course in the candidate's main subject area other than those referred to in 3(b) above.
- [45] (d) Attendance at a minimum of 70 per cent of each class or course.

[46] 4. Timing
- [47] (a) The study skills day schools or online study skills course referred to in 3(a)(i) above must normally be undertaken during the first term of registration;
- [48] (b) The first part of the reflective journal referred to in 3(a)(v) above shall normally be submitted after completion of the first 60 CATS points of study and the second part after completion of at least 100 CATS points.
- [49] (c) The assignment referred to in 3(c) above shall normally be submitted during the last year of registration for the Certificate.
- [50] 5. Credit may not be counted as part of the Certificate of Higher Education if it contains a significant proportion of material (normally 30% or more) duplicated from a class or course already counted towards any certificate, diploma or other award of the University.
- [51] 6. The Director of the Certificate shall have the discretion to permit any candidate to count towards the Certificate up to 30 CATS points from any class or course offered by the Department for Continuing Education so long as these shall have been obtained no more than four years before formal registration on the Certificate.
- [52] 7. Candidates may count up to 105 CATS points towards the Certificate of Higher Education from courses studied online.
- [53] 8. A candidate may be required to attend a viva voce examination.
- [54] 9. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [55] 10. Candidates who fail any accredited class or course they intent to count towards the Certificate under 3(a) above, or who fail to satisfy the examiners in the reflective journal under 3(a)(v) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of that class or course, or resubmit the reflective journal on not more than one occasion.This shall normally be within one month of the initial failure. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the assignments under 3(b) or 3(c) above may be permitted to resubmit the assignment or assignments on not more than one occasion. This shall normally be within three months of the initial failure. All resubmissions of work must be within one year of the initial failure.
[56] History of Art

[57] 1. Course
- [58] (a) The course shall consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and classes on the subjects of the History of Art. The course, which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of a minimum of two, and no more than three years.
- [59] (b) The subjects of the course will be taught in two one-year modules. One module shall be offered each year. Students must complete Module 1 before proceeding to Module 2.
- [60] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [61] (a) Attendance at the theoretical courses; students must attend a minimum of 75 per cent of the equivalent of sixty two-hour sessions;
- [62] (b) Attendance at six study visits;
- [63] (c) Four written assignments of not more than 1,500 words and four of not more than 2,000 words based on the subjects taught;
- [64] (d) Two long essays one of 3,000 words and one of 5,000 words on a subject approved by the Course Director;
- [65] (e) Six class tests. [66] The written work under (c) and (d), and the class tests under (e), will be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates.
- [67] 3. Candidates may be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course.
- [68] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [69] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the written work under (c) and (d), or the class tests under (e), may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more that one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
[70] History of Art (for students admitted from October 2011)
- [71] 1. The course shall consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars and classes on the subject of the History of Art. The course, which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of a minimum of one, and no more than two, years.

[72] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [73] (a) attendance at the theoretical courses, including study visits; students must attend a minimum of 75 per cent of the equivalent of thirty two-hour sessions;
- [74] (b) one written assignment of nor more than 1,000 words. This assignment is formative only and marks do not contribute to the final award;
- [75] (c) five written assignments of not more than 1,500 words based on the subjects taught;
- [76] (d) one extended essay of not more than 3,000 words on a subject approved by the course director.
- [77] The written work under (c) and (d) will be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates.
- [78] 3. Candidates may be expected to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course.
- [79] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [80] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the written work under (b) and (c) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more that one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
[81] Theology and Religious Studies
- [82] 1. The course shall consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars and classes on the subject of Theology and Religious Studies. The course, which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of a minimum of one, and no more than two, years.

[83] 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
- [84] (a) Attendance at the theoretical courses, including study visits; students must attend a minimum of 75% of the equivalent of 30 two-hour sessions;
- [85] (b) One written assignment of not more than 1,000 words. This assignment is formative only and marks do not contribute to the final award.
- [86] (c) Five written assignments of not more than 1,500 words based on the subjects taught.
- [87] (d) One case study of not more than 3,000 words on a subject approved by the course director. The written work under (c) and (d) will be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates.
- [88] 3. Candidates may be expected to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course.
- [89] 4. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
- [90] 5. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the written work under 2(c) and (d) may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more that one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
