[1] English Literature (for candidates admitted from October 2011)

  1. [2] 1. The course which is available on a part-time basis only, may be taken over a period of two, and no more than four years.
  2. [3] 2. The examination will consist of:
    1. [4] I. Six papers, of which there will be two on each of the topics set out below. Each paper will be of two hours, with an additional fifteen minutes allowed as reading time in respect of each of the two papers in (c) below. One of the two papers on each of these topics shall be taken during the third term of study:
      1. [5] (a) [Until 1 October 2013: Renaissance Literature and Shakespeare] [From 1 October 2013: Early Modern Literature];
      2. [6] (b) Victorian and Modern Literature;
      3. [7] (c) Criticism: History, Theory, and Practice.
    2. [8] II. Eleven coursework essays, of not more than 2,000 words in length. Essays must be the candidate's own work and every candidate must submit a statement to that effect. The coursework essays will be forwarded to the examiners for consideration by such dates as the examiners shall determine and shall notify candidates.
    3. [9] III. Candidates may, at the discretion of the examiners, be required to attend a viva voce examination at the end of the course of study.
  3. [10] 3. The examiners may award a distinction to candidates for the Certificate.
  4. [11] 4. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the assessed work specified in clause 2 may be permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination which they have failed on not more than one occasion which shall normally be within one year of the initial failure.
