Leaving OSPS: Ill Health

The Pensions Officer (OSPS) should be contacted if you or a member would like to discuss ill health retirement.

More details about the process and benefits can be found in the ill health retirement part of the members’ section of the website.

From an employer perspective it is important to be aware that:

  • The process can take a long time to resolve;
  • There is no guarantee that the Trustees will agree to ill health retirement even if you think that the member is medically incapable of performing their duties; and
  • Ill health retirement should not be used as a means of resolving personnel issues such as workplace stress and bullying.

You should also be aware of your responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act. Although the Trustees do not generally ask to see an Occupational Health report they may ask to see one in certain circumstances.
