OSPS Promotion and Regrading
If you are promoted or regraded and your employer regards your post as academic or academic related then you can no longer remain in OSPS. In these circumstances you will leave OSPS and join USS instead. If you are a University employee then you will normally have to move to USS if your post is grade 6 or above because the University regards these posts as academic-related. Other employers may have a different policy.
If you are a University employee it would be helpful if you could contact us if you become academic-related as we do not always get informed about such matters.
University employees at grade 6 or above can remain in OSPS in the following circumstances:
-
Single spine payroll mapping
If you became academic-related following the University’s single spine payroll mapping exercise in August 2006 (or July 2007 for employees previously on Whitley Council payscales) then you were given the option to remain in OSPS. However, if you subsequently move up a grade due to regrading or promotion you must move to USS in most circumstances. If you elected to stay in OSPS and remain at the same grade you can choose to move over to USS at a later date if you wish.
-
Multiple posts
If you take on a second or third post that is academic-related then you will join USS on those posts. This means that you will be contributing to OSPS and USS at the same time.
Can I stay in OSPS if I am regraded or promoted after age 60?
If you are promoted or regraded into an academic-related post after age 60 at the University, then you will have to move to USS.What happens if I am seconded to an academic-related post?
You will have to leave OSPS and have the option of joining USS. If you return to your support staff role, you will then leave USS and have the option of rejoining OSPS. If you did not transfer your earlier OSPS benefits to USS, the two periods of service will not be joined together unless the gap is less than one month. What will happen to my OSPS benefits if I move to USS due to regrading or promotion?
Depending on your Qualifying Service you will be entitled to a refund or deferred benefits. Please see the leaving OSPS section for more details.
Will my OSPS benefits be transferred automatically to USS?
Please note that your OSPS benefits will not be transferred to USS automatically. If you wish to transfer your OSPS benefits to USS you will need to give USS your written permission to commence a pension transfer investigation. In order to transfer your benefits to USS under Club arrangements you will need to complete the USS transfer inquiry form within two years of joining USS and then accept the service credit offered.
