Academic-related Employees

Employees on grades 6 or above at the University normally have to join USS. However, there are a few exceptions, which will be explained below. It would be helpful if you could ask the member to contact us if they become academic-related as we do not always get informed about such matters.

Single spine payroll mapping

Members who became academic-related following the University’s single spine payroll mapping exercise in August 2006 (or July 2007 for employees previously on Whitley Council payscales) were given the option to remain in OSPS. However, members who subsequently move up a grade due to regrading or promotion must move to USS in most circumstances. Members who remain at the same grade can elect to move over to USS if they wish.

Multiple posts

If a member takes on a second or third post that is academic-related then they join USS on those posts. This means that they will be contributing to OSPS and USS at the same time.

Over 60

If a member is promoted or regraded into an academic-related post after age 60 then they have to move across to USS.

Secondment

If a member is seconded to an academic-related post, then they cannot stay in OSPS. They will join USS instead, unless they choose to opt out.

Final Salary or Career Revalued

Members of OSPS since before 1 October 2011 who join USS before 1 October 2013, will join the final salary section of USS. In all other circumstances, they will join the career revlued benefits section of USS, unless they qualify for the final salary section through previous membership of USS.
