Finding Microsoft features from 2000/2003 in 2007

How do I find a feature in Word, Excel, Powerpoint or Access 2007 that I used to use in 2000/2003?

Microsoft has produced 'Online Interactive Guides'. These documents help locate where commands have moved in the 2007 interface. Although it compares Office 2003 with Office 2007, most answers are the same for Office 2000. Go to the page and follow 'Start the Guide':

In Office 2007 applications where is the Help icon?

It is the question mark on the right of the screen, near the top; use that or press F1.

In Word 2007, how do I get the ruler to display?

Click on the little icon on the right of the screen, above the vertical scrollbar.

In Office 2007 applications, where do I find the things like 'save', 'print' etc that used to be in the File menu?

At the top left hand corner of the application is a round coloured icon with the Office 2007 logo; it is referred to as the 'Office Button' and is the equivalent of the 'File Menu'.

UAS Network Specific - General

Will I be able to use Office 2007 on the laptop?

On most laptops, yes. If in doubt, contact the helpdesk for up-to-date information.

My default font and paragraph styles in Word 2007 are different to the ones I used in the UAS Word 2000 setup. How can I change them back?

The UAS default font is Arial and is the preferred font. The defaults you see when you open Word 2007 are controlled by the normal template. To make changes to this you will need to do the following:

  1. Open Word 2007
  2. Open Normal.dotm from (in the 'Open' dialogue box, select 'Trusted Templates' from the top of the Places Bar)
  3. Make changes to defaults as required
  4. Close and re-open Word - your changes should have taken effect.

When I type a line which begins with an asterisk or a figure one, Word applies bulleted or numbered lists. How can I stop it?

Switch it off for all documents by going to Office Button, Word Options, Proofing, Autocorrect, AutoFormat as you type, Apply as you type, then put a tick in the following features:

  • Automatic numbered lists
  • Automatic bulleted lists

When I add a table in Word, it does not show the gridlines. How can I get them to show all the time?

With the cursor in a table, select View gridlines from the table ‘Layout’ tab. It is a ‘sticky key’ and will stay on for all tables in all sessions until switched off.

When moving to another pc to work, can I take any of my personalised settings with me?

Yes, there is a facility to backup and restore certain settings/files. The icons can be found under Start, Applications, Office 2007. The features backed up are:

  • The Quick Access toolbars for all applications
  • Places Bar settings
  • Clipart saved in the Microsoft Clip Organizer
  • The personal autocorrect file

I've used the 'Remove Watermark' feature in Word 2007 but it doesn't delete my watermark. How can I delete it?

Try going into the header/footer and clicking on part of the watermark itself (it is only a picture of a word). Hit the Delete key to delete the picture. If it doesn’t disappear on the first hit, hit Delete a couple more times – sometimes there is more than one layer of the same watermark.

UAS Network Specific - Templates

What is the difference between ‘Trusted Templates’ and ‘Templates’ on the Places Bar?

‘Trusted Templates’ leads to the personal template area which can only be seen by the user. ‘Templates’ leads to the large central and group template area which is used for shared templates. Both are designated ‘trusted’ areas. This means macros in Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents located in these areas will automatically run.

Where do I find the templates which used to be at File, New, in the legacy 2000 setup?

Office Button, New, My Templates.

My group wants to set up a new group template, where do we save them?

The template area setup is generally similar to the setup in the legacy 2000 system. Groups can save new templates in their group template folder - in the 'Open' dialogue box, select 'Templates' from the bottom of the Places Bar, then move to the \groupname\ folder and then to the \Group\ folder.

UAS Network Specific - House Style and Toolbars from 2000

Is there a house style I should be following?

There are rules and conventions regarding University branding (this page has access restricted to the University) and University writing and style.

I've been told to look for the Oxford Toolbar on the Add-ins tab but I don't have an Add-ins tab.

Open Word, go to Office Button, 'Word Options', 'Add-ins', in 'Manage Add-ins' select 'Templates', on the following dialogue box make sure that 'Oxford Toolbar.dot' is ticked.

I need to use the Oxford House Style for some documents, is there a way I can get this?

Yes, go to Office Button, New, My Templates and select ‘Oxford House Style.dotx’ from the list. This blank document contains the house style as it stood in 2009. It contains the styles of the default blank document as they were in the UAS Word 2000 setup, plus the paragraph spacing, tab settings and autonumbering and bullets galleries.

I want to use the House Style heading styles but don’t want to use other house style features, do I have to add them to my normal template?

No, just go to the ‘Change Styles’ button on the Home tab, select ‘Style Set’ and select ‘Oxford House Style Heading Set’. This will change the styles in the document to the house style ones but still allow you to use your own normal template.

Note that the House Style in this style set is as it stood in 2009.

UAS Network Specific - Excel and Access

I use an Excel spreadsheet with macros but every time I open it up it has disabled my macros. Although I go in and ‘enable this content’, the next time I open it, it is disabled again. How can I make it stay enabled?

To make the macros in a file stay enabled, the file has to be in a ‘Trusted Location’. The default Trusted Locations pre-set on the UAS network are listed in the restricted-access downloadable document, "UAS Customisations in Office 2000 - Word". See Downloadable documents.

Files which sit outside of these locations will need to have their locations set as ‘trusted’. Care should be taken not to set as trusted any folders where files with potentially damaging macros (viruses) may be located. To set a file as a trusted location, in the application go to Office button, application name Options, Trust Centre, Trust Centre Settings, Trusted Locations, Add New Location, and follow the prompts. This has to be carried out per user, per computer.

I use ADI but it doesn’t work with Excel 2007. Is there something I should do?

ADI users need to change a setting in Excel. Office button, Excel Options, Trust Centre, Trust Centre settings, Macro Settings, select ‘Trust access to the VBA project object model’.

I use an Access database but every time I open it up I get a security warning saying certain content in the database has been disabled. Although I go in and ‘enable this content’, the next time I open it, it is disabled again. How can I make it stay enabled?

To make databases stay enabled, the file has to be in a ‘Trusted Location’.

I develop Access databases and am surprised to find Sandbox Mode has been disabled.

As much of our existing Access code, i.e. environment variables, does not function with Sandbox Mode enabled, it has been disabled in the Registry.

Compatibility

Can I open files created in previous versions of Office?

Yes. When you open a file in Office 2007 that was created with an earlier version of Office, the file will open in compatibility mode, and you will see 'Compatibility Mode' in the title bar of the document window.

Will people using older versions of Office be able to open my Office 2007 files?

Yes, they will be able to open an Office 2007 file in an earlier version of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, providing they have the Compatibility Pack installed on the machine with the older version of Office.

Are Office 2007 and the compatibility pack available for Apple Mac users?

Mac's are out of scope for this website, however, MS Office 2008 for Macintosh has been released which is fully compatible with Office 2007.
