Changes delivered with Office 2007

The way in which Office 2007 has been delivered to the network is slightly different to the out-of-the-box version. This is mainly to accommodate its use on a network. Users' files are stored in network locations and not on the pc itself. This enables colleagues to share files and allows the files to be backed up every night. It also enables a measure of portability of personal settings from one networked computer to another.

The Font change

Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access come with the Microsoft blank documents set to Arial font instead of Microsoft’s 2007 default of Calibri. Arial is flexible and interchangeable between many applications whereas Calibri is quite obscure. Apart from the change to the default font, Excel and PowerPoint will be ‘out of the box’ with no customisations.

Places Bar changes

Places Bar screenshotThe Places Bar is the left hand shortcuts menu in the dialogue box that appears when ‘Open’ or ‘Save As’ is used. The shortcut to ‘Templates’ leads to folders where users can save templates for use by their section – this is designated as a trusted location. The shortcut to ‘Trusted Templates’ on the Places Bar does not lead to a folder where group templates can be saved so can be ignored.

The shortcut to ‘My Documents’ has been removed because this folder is not recommended for saving documents as it is located on the c: drive. ‘My Documents’ seen by the a person on one pc is not the same place as ‘My Documents’ seen by the same person at another pc. More importantly, the c: drive does not get backed up and cannot be shared by colleagues.

Trusted Locations

Some Access databases and spreadsheets will not function properly if they are not located in a trusted location. For details of the default trusted locations on the network, refer to the restricted-access downloadable document, "UAS Customisations in Office 2000 - Word". See Downloadable documents.

Changes to Word's general settings

Word 2007 has been installed with a few changes to its default settings. They mainly replicate the setting as it was in the legacy 2000 setup, e.g. 'repl ordinals (1st) with superscript': Microsoft setting ‘Yes’, UAS setting ‘No’.

A list of these settings is supplied in a restricted-access document, , under the heading, ‘Office 2007 Settings which have been changed from the Microsoft default’. This document also contains a list of settings which were not carried forward from the legacy 2000 setup. Individual users can change them as is required.

Sandbox mode

Access database and Excel developers should be aware that Sandbox Mode has been switched off.
