What you should report to the police and how to do so...

I have received a threatening/malicious letter

1. Do not handle the letter or envelope any more than you already have - the scenes of crime office will need to handle these in a specific way to preserve evidence.

2. Telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and tell the operator your call relates to Operation Rumble and that you want to report receiving a threatening/malicious letter.

3. Tell the operator where you are calling from - If you are able to provide your postcode as this will help identify your location.

4. Describe the letter and answer any further questions the operator may have.

5. The police may want to seize the letter.

I have received a threatening phone call

1. Telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and tell the operator that your call relates to Operation Rumble and you want to report threatening phone call.

2. Tell the operator where you are calling from - If you are able to provide your postcode this will help identify your location.

3. Preserve any recordings of the threatening/malicious conversation.

4. Inform your network provider (BT/02 etc) that you have had threatening phone calls and get an intercept put onto your telephone line.

I have discovered a crime has taken place

1. Telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and tell the operator your call relates to Operation Rumble and you want to report a crime.

2. Tell the operator where you are - if you are able to provide the postcode this will help to identify your location.

3. If you have CCTV footage of the incident, keep it safe.

4. Write down the registration details of any vehicles seen and the descriptions of any suspicious people.

5. If there is evidence - such as paint or bricks, don’t touch anything.

6. In poor weather try to protect evidence by covering it - a dustbin lid over a footprint on the floor, or in mud, or a plastic sheet for example.

A crime is happening now

1. Dial 999 and ask for police.

2. When you are connected tell the operator the incident relates to Operation Rumble and that a crime is happening now.

3. Describe where you are calling from (with post code if possible) and say what is happening; describe people and vehicles that may be involved.

4. Do not put yourself in a vunerable or a dangerous position.

5. Follow the instructions given to you by the Police operator - they will tell you what to do and whether the police will attend.

6. Write down what you see with descriptions of people and the registration numbers of any vehicle involved.

7. Preserve any CCTV or video footage of the incident.

I have seen someone acting suspiciously

1. Telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and tell the operator your call relates to  Operation Rumble and you want to report a suspicious person.

2. Tell the operator where you are (with a postcode if possible)and describe what you are seeing or what you have seen.

3. Write down what you saw and include the description of the suspect persons and note any vehicles used, with the registartion numbers.

4. Preserve any CCTV or Video footage of the incident.

I have been sent goods I didn't order

1. Do not throw the goods away, keep them safe and don't handle them more than you need to.

2. Telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and tell the operator your call relates to Operation Rumble and you want to report unsolicited mail.

3. Contact the sending company and inform them you have reported the delivery of unsolicited goods to the police and give them the police reference number.

4. Let the sending company know if the police have seized the goods.

6. Ask the sending company what actions they want you to take.
