Grading procedure: new and vacant posts

Important note: a planned appointment is required for all new positions, replacement/refills and direct appointments. Raise a staff request to request a planned appointment.

Grades 1-10

In cases where departments wish to create a new post, vary the substantive grades of an existing post, or vary the duties of the post, the job description submitted with the staff request will be graded.

Existing posts which have been evaluated using HERA, and where the duties are to remain the same, will not routinely be graded again. Please provide the existing LN/S number in the staff request. Ten working days should be allowed for the grading of posts.

Externally funded research posts at grades 6 and 7, and other posts that match generic HERA profiles (e.g. research roles at grades 8 and above) will not be graded.

The staff request approver will be auto-notified when the post and/or planned appointment has been authorised.

Posts above grade 10

Applications to set up a post at (or to promote an existing postholder to) a grade above grade 10 are dealt with by the Senior Appointments Panel comprising members of the Personnel Committee. Staff requests should be raised by the employing department and the relevant division, and the Reward team will ensure that applications are forwarded to the Panel. The staff request approver will be auto-notified when the post and/or planned appointment has been authorised.
