Salaries and Payscales

General information

University staff in grades 1 to 10 are employed on incremental pay scales. New staff are usually appointed to the bottom of the grade for their role, and progress through the grade by annual increments.

Payscales are subject to an annual 'cost-of-living' review. Your monthly salary will be paid direct to your bank account, which should be provided on the Data Collection Form sent out with the Offer Letter, usually on the penultimate working day of each month. A full list of pay dates is available on the Payroll website.

Each grade contains normal incremental pay points as well as discretionary (sometimes referred to as "super-scale") points beyond the maximum of the normal range for the grade. These points are normally only accessible in acute cases of recruitment and retention.

Roles that have been graded 1 to 5 are referred to as university support staff roles. Roles graded at 6 and above are referred to as academic-related posts. Different terms and conditions apply to these two staff groups (see staff handbooks).

Incremental progression

  • Support staff - provided that you have been in post for three months prior to 1 August, you will receive an annual increment within your grade on 1 August and thereafter annually until you reach the maximum point of the 'normal' (i.e. not the super-scale discretionary range) scale for the grade of your post.
  • Academic-related staff - provided that you have been in post for three months prior to 1 October, you will receive an annual increment within your grade on 1 October and thereafter annually until you reach the maximum point of the 'normal' (i.e. not the super-scale discretionary range) scale for the grade of your post.
The University has separate pay arrangements for senior officers employed in grade ALC6. Starting salaries for these staff are determined by the ALC6 Panel of the Personnel Committee. They are subject to the same annual 'cost-of-living' review as other staff. Individual ALC6 salaries are reviewed biennially and details will be notified to individual staff members separately.
