Foreword

by the Proctors and Assessor, March 2011 - March 2012

As a student you have links both with your particular College and with the University as a whole. Essential Information for Students contains factual information and advice you may need about the University side of your life to help you make the most of the intellectual, cultural and social opportunities on offer at Oxford. The topics covered include funding, health, welfare, personal safety and security, accommodation, the central Student Union, setting up a student club, University sport, Libraries, IT and other support services.

As well as providing general information and guidance, this booklet gives you formal notification (and explanation) of the University’s codes on residence, intellectual property rights, examinations, conduct, medical incapacity, and complaints. Please take time to read the information, so that you do not end up at a disadvantage if you get into difficulties or want to exercise your rights under any of the procedures.

Although we are senior officers of the University, we are not professional administrators but ordinary academics elected by our colleges to serve for one year with particular oversight of examinations, conduct and welfare. We are well aware of the needs and pressures of student life. If you have any concerns, or suggestions for improvement, they can be channelled through the officers of OUSU and your JCR and MCR presidents, with whom we have regular meetings. Alternatively you are welcome to consult us directly by appointment for assistance and advice. The inside cover of the booklet gives our contact details; and throughout you will find the details of other important contacts inside and outside the University should you need to follow up any of the matters referred to.
