Section 6: University Academic Support and Other Services

6.1 Libraries

Library Services in Oxford are provided to students both by their own colleges and by the University. There is plenty of useful information about the University’s library services on the web at: www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

When new students arrive in Oxford they will be provided with a University Card which allows access to all the libraries which form part of the Bodleian Libraries. You must carry this card whenever you use a library and in particular you will need it when you want to borrow books.

You will be given basic information about libraries and offered times for induction sessions early in your first weeks. It is a good idea to attend these sessions to get information which will help you explore the extremely rich and diverse services available to you.

The Bodleian Libraries’ catalogues and all the electronic resources are accessible via SOLO, the on-line library system which you can check in any location.

See section 10.5 and Appendix F for library regulations.

6.2 Computing and Information Technology

Computing facilities and information and communication technology (ICT) services for academic purposes are provided by individual colleges and departments. Many will also provide shared computers for general use. Information on these will be available to you when you arrive, often in your pigeon hole, or sent to your University e-mail address. Look out for induction sessions on IT too.

For an overview of ICT at the University, information about bringing your own computer, how to access email and internet, security and anti-virus information, etc. see the welcometoIT.ox.ac.uk web-site.

The central Oxford University IT Services manages the University network and its connection to external networks (www.it.ox.ac.uk). It offers a range of IT services:

  • Email services and web servers including personal web space
  • Groupware services for collaborative working
  • Secure, large file exchange service
  • Automatic back-up and archive facilities
  • ICT Courses – 1 hour to half day, introductory to advanced, Word to web design
  • On-line shop for software, hardware, course guides, consumables, etc.
  • Site licensed software at greatly reduced prices for University members
  • Help Centre and drop-in user facilities
  • Computer hardware breakdown service
  • Advice and help in using ICT in teaching, research and projects
  • Multimedia and digital video facilities
  • Weblearn Virtual Learning Environment
  • Secure wifi, remote access and mobile services

See the IT Services home page at www.it.ox.ac.uk for further details.

With so many facilities being available to so many people, the harmonious use of them by all users is vital. All authorisation is condition on the user obeying the rules of the body operating any particular facility or service. Computer misuse is in many cases an offence in law; even where it is not, misuse may well lead to action under the University’s disciplinary procedures (see section 10.5 and Appendix G and the relevant section of www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/welcometoit.

6.3 University Language Centre

The Language Centre is a central academic service for all matriculated students. It is open on weekdays all year, except for two weeks at Christmas and one week at Easter, and on Saturday mornings in full term.

The library is the only one in Oxford to specialise in language learning, and about 130 languages are represented. Course books are often accompanied by audiotapes, videotapes or CDs. Live satellite television is available in fourteen languages. There are numerous quiet study spaces which users are very welcome to use individually or for a language exchange. Library inductions take place at 10.00 and 14.00 each day in Full Term.

LASR Courses are offered in eight European languages and in Mandarin. These courses normally last all year and are very popular. Students who need a language for study or research should ask about priority application. For highly motivated students who wish to obtain a certificate, the OPAL programme offers fee-paying evening courses in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. If you are unable to take a place on a course the librarian provides advice on self-study learning and there is guidance from advisors in French and German in the Lambda project.

International studies who first language is not English may take courses in English for Academic Studies, which are aimed at improving students’ use of English, with classes focusing on oral English or on academic writing.
