In Focus: working together to provide simpler services

Staff across the University are being invited to suggest areas for improvement and design more efficient processes so that we can work together to reduce complexity and adopt common approaches. In this session you’ll find out what the programme is aiming to achieve, how we plan to get there, and how you can help shape the way in which we work in the future.

Mental health in the workplace

1.40 – 2.15pm 
Presenters: Catherine Paxton (Divisional Secretary, Social Sciences), Gary Tideswell (Director of Occupational Health and Safety) and Kevin Coutinho (Head of Equality and Diversity)

This session will enable colleagues to develop a deeper understanding of recent developments in mental health, and how the University is planning to respond to them. The University has recently signed up to the ‘Mindful Employer Scheme’, and over the coming months work will start to develop an action plan to enable a better navigation of mental health issues in the workplace.

How does staff mental health fit into a wider health and wellbeing agenda? The session will consider current support provision, alongside the role of departments, leaders and central services. The ongoing work to develop a University strategy for health and wellbeing will be presented. The session will be jointly delivered by colleagues from EDU and Occupational Health and Safety.

Increasing access to Oxford

2.25 – 3pm 
Presenters: Samina Khan (Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach) and panel of undergraduates

An overview of the collaborative work taking place to increase the number of students from diverse backgrounds to Oxford and other selective universities, informed by the perspectives of current students. This session aims to inform colleagues of the current access issues facing the University relating to undergraduates. It will include perspectives from a panel of our undergraduates, who will share thoughts on their own personal experiences of applying, and set out how they are working to shape Oxford’s future agenda in this important area. The session will enable attendees to reflect on their own awareness of access issues through an interactive  session, and will conclude with a Q&A.

Data privacy – handling security breaches

3.30 - 4.05pm

Find out more about data privacy, its relationship with information security and how we are preparing for the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. This interactive session will give you an opportunity to:
  • learn how to recognise potential data breaches and what to do next;
  • understand the impact of the GDPR on breach handling and what it means for you;
  • get some top tips on keeping personal data secure.  
We’ll explore a number of possible breach scenarios with you – and think about how they could have been prevented.

The future of the University estate

4.15 - 4.50pm
Presenters: Isobel Hughes (Director of Operations, Estates Services) and Carolyn Puddicombe (Director of Asset & Space Management, Estates Services)

A look at some of the major plans and challenges for the University’s estate in 2018 and beyond. Estates Services is responsible for the management and strategic development of the University’s functional (teaching, research and administration) and commercial estate, comprising well over 400 buildings and their associated infrastructure. In all, these comprise specialist research buildings, teaching laboratories and lecture halls, sports facilities, libraries and museums, administrative and ceremonial buildings, graduate accommodation, office spaces and warehouses, and agricultural land and property.

In this session, we will provide an update on the capital programme in 2018 and beyond – which aims to deliver world class new buildings for the University – and explain the impact of current issues such as Brexit and the importance of sustainable construction.  

We will also describe how we are planning to develop key areas of the estate, including Osney Mead and Begbroke Science Park, and how the University is contributing to Oxford City Council’s Local Plan (2016-2036) and to tackling the growing housing issue in the city.

Financial stability – now and in the future

Presenters: Mike Glover (Director of Planning and Council Secretariat), Lindsay Pearson (Deputy Director, Finance Division) and Jeremy Sims, (Divisional Financial Controller, MPLS)

A case study of how MPLS is working to manage its finances efficiently and effectively, followed by a longer term view of changes in the University’s finances, which are likely to result from a number of external and internal factors, including the University’s new Bond. Attending this session will provide you with two different perspectives of the University’s finances, and an opportunity to take part in a concluding Q&A. Jeremy Sims, Divisional Financial Controller for MPLS, will set out the approaches the division has developed in recent years to enhance the ways in which its ten departments (which had a combined income of £248m in 16/17) are able to manage their finances. Lindsay Pearson, Deputy Director of Finance, will provide details of the £750m Bond that the University raised in December 2017, including what it is for, and how it will be managed. He will also reflect on the longer term consequences that may result.  Mike Glover, Director of Planning and Council Secretariat, will convene the session, and chair the closing Q&A.
