Research Outcomes System (ROS)
Introduction
The Research Outcomes System (ROS) is a web based system currently used by AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, NERC and for NC3R awards, through which grant holders are required to provide information about the outputs and outcomes of their research. For many Research Councils reporting on ROS has replaced the final academic report (please see the individual Research Council pages for more details). The participating Research Councils will use the information to inform their analysis of research investments and to demonstrate the impact of research funding to Government, and it may be made publicly available through the Gateway to Research.
Information is requested under the following categories:
- Publications (including journals, books and conferences)
- Other Research Outputs (including biological, creative, electronic and physical)
- Collaborations and Partnerships
- Dissemination and Communication
- Intellectual Property and Exploitation
- Awards & Appointments
- Staff Development
- Further Funding
- Impact
Each of these categories has various sub-sections to help users be as specific as possible when inputting information. In addition, grant holders are asked to provide a brief summary of the Key Findings arising from their research.
Data Requested by 2 April 2013
All Principal Investigators (PIs) with one or more grants from the AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, NERC or a NC3R award that have ended since 1 April 2006 have been asked to provide information about their activities, outputs and outcomes, using the Research Outcomes System (ROS) by 02 April 2013.
PIs should use their existing Je-S user name and password to log into ROS to submit their information. A PI can also give someone else permission to submit their outcomes information by nominating them as a 'delegate'. Any Co-Investigator (Co-I) who is registered with Je-S will also have access to their grants through ROS.
The participating Research Councils have advised that PIs can - and should - submit to ROS all year round, however, there will be an annual collection period each year (which for 2013 is February and March). There are currently no sanctions associated with a failure to use ROS, but it is highly probable that these will be introduced as most Research Councils are now using ROS instead of Academic Final Reports. Please note that Oxford has no facility at present to 'centrally' bulk upload publications data into ROS and PIs are responsible for ensuring that their ROS record is up to date.
Further information is available from the help section of the ROS site and ROS support can be reached at: Researchoutcomes@rcuk.ac.uk.
The MRC and STFC use an alternative outcomes reporting system called Researchfish.
