Slip Resistance Meter

Slip Resistance Meter

The Surtronic Duo (fondly known as ’Kenny’ – the image will illustrate why) is a hand-held surface roughness instrument that allows the user to measure, analyse and assess the slip resistance of flooring.

Pedestrian slips are the single most common cause of injuries in the UK workplace. The Duo was developed to make objective measurements of a floor’s roughness or slip resistance, to help identify accident black spots and mitigate liability should an accident occur.  ‘Kenny’ can be used on vinyl, linoleum, tiles, painted wood, terrazzo, marble and smooth concrete, although it is not suitable for use on rough concrete, very textured surfaces or carpet.

The unit is extremely portable and suitable for large or small areas. The Duo splits into two parts, allowing the measuring head to be placed on the flooring and the measurement to be made via a ‘remote control'. The results can then be fed into the HSE’s Slip Assessment Tool (SAT) software to obtain a quantifiable risk assessment. The SAT was developed by the HSE to help assess the slip potential of pedestrian walkway surfaces, and may be downloaded free of charge, from: www.hse.gov.uk/slips.
