University of Oxford Croucher Scholarships (UOCS)

Overview

The UOCS scheme aims to provide students who are able to demonstrate academic excellence with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate research study at the University of Oxford. The scheme is jointly funded by the Croucher Foundation and the University of Oxford.

Permanent Hong Kong residents

Other criteria

First class honours or equivalent in first degree OR a substantive postgraduate degree at Master's level or above

Level of study

DPhil

Subject

Subjects linked to natural sciences, technology and medicine in the Mathematical, Physical & Life Sciences Division or Medical Science Division

Duration

Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course (subject to an annual renewal process based on a review of their academic progress and their funding position)

Type of student

Students accepted to start a graduate course at Oxford in 2010/11

Value

Awards cover University and college fees and provide a grant for living expenses (£13,290 p/a in 2009-10).

The Croucher Foundation will consider applications directly from OUCS recipients for the costs of airfares and conference attendance.

Application procedure     

1) Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting University of Oxford Croucher Scholarships in the University of Oxford Scholarships section of the University's graduate application form

2) You must also apply separately to the Croucher Foundation for this scholarship. Full details on how to apply are available from the scholarships section of the Croucher Foundation website.

Your application can only be considered if you apply to both Oxford and the Croucher Foundation

The Croucher Foundation will organise interviews with shortlisted candidates in Hong Kong and the UK in March and April 2010

Closing date

Application Deadline 2 for admission to Oxford. This is 8 January 2010 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy students; 22 January 2010 for all other subjects

The deadline for application to the Croucher Foundation is the 16th November 2009

Results

We expect to notify successful candidates in April 2010.

Due to the volume of applications received, we are unable to contact unsuccessful applicants individually or provide feedback on their applications.

Other information

Scholars will be expected to write an annual report to the Croucher Foundation on their work.

About the donor  

The Croucher Foundation is a private trust set up by the late Noel Croucher, one of the founders of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and a British businessman in Hong Kong for over 70 years. It is a private, independent foundation based in Hong Kong without affiliation to any organisation, and derives direct income entirely from its own investments in different parts of the world.

The Foundation specializes in promoting the standard of natural science, technology and medicine in Hong Kong through awards and grants to scientists based in and serving Hong Kong. The work of the Foundation has been conducted with the support of panels of international experts invited to assess the scientific values of individual projects
